PhD position
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time temporary position as PhD candidate is available for four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department. The position is funded by the Faculty of Medicine under the project “The TMS Brain Research Initiative: Understanding Plasticity and Neural Circuit Dynamics in the Brain”. The project is led by Professor Clive Bramham of the Neuroscience Research Group. The doctoral fellow will join an interdisciplinary team from the Department of Biomedicine, University of Bergen, and the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, NTNU, Norway.
About the project/work tasks:
This project investigates mechanism of neuronal synaptic plasticity. The PhD project includes high-resolution imaging of Arc protein trafficking insides cells, analysis of Arc protein-protein interactions, and analysis of cellular functions and molecular mechanisms. In addition, the doctoral student will assist at the core facility for superresolution-based single molecule (SMLM) at the Department of Biomedicine.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in neuroscience or molecular cell biology
- The applicant must have experience with site-directed mutagenesis and biochemical analysis of protein-protein interactions using coimmunoprecipitation
- Experience with study of protein-protein interactions in the nucleus is an advantage
- Experience with neuronal cell lines or primary neuronal cultures in an advantage
- Experience with training and teaching of students is an advantage
- The candidate should be proficient in written and oral English
- Personal skills will be emphasized. The candidate should be able to work independently and interactively in a team setting, be motivated and responsible, and have a great work capacity and enthusiasm for research
About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Organized research training (PhD program):
The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the faculty in order to qualify for the position.
Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
The PhD-position:
PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
