PhD Position

We have a vacant fixed-term position for three years as a research fellow to study the marine microbial community and the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean.

The position is part of and is funded by the I-CRYME and WOBEC project. I-CRYME investigates the effects of melting cryosphere (glaciers and sea ice) on ocean ecosystems, and WOBEC focuses on biodiversity and changes in ecosystems in the Weddell Sea. More information can be found here I-CRYME – Norsk Polarinstitutt (npolar.no) and WOBEC I

Your place of work will be in Tromsø. Some travel must be expected, including fieldwork and project-related activities in the Southern Ocean.

Work content

The project aims to understand the impact of cryosphere-ocean interactions and other environmental factors (e.g., sea-ice dynamics) into a context of marine microbial communities and the nutrient and carbon cycle in King Håkon VII's Sea in the Southern Ocean.

You will work with plankton dynamics, nutrient cycles and CO2 dynamics along ice-ocean gradients in King Haakon VII Sea in the eastern part of the Weddell Sea. The tasks include analysis of phytoplankton and ice algae composition, as well as biomass data from the water column and sea ice. Furthermore, you will investigate bulk properties such as Chl-a, particulate organic carbon, and biogenic silica.

In addition, you will analyze the physical and biogeochemical properties of the environment. This includes measurements of natural isotopes of oxygen (d18O), macronutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon (CO2), and total alkalinity).

Qualifications

This position requires a master’s degree or equivalent in Biological Oceanography, Marine Biology, Marine Environmental Sciences, Marine Ecology, Geology, or a related field (including documentation of the BSc and MSc education with grades translated to English or in a Scandinavian language)

A Norwegian Master’s degree or equivalent master’s degree from a foreign university is required. You are welcome to apply if you have not completed your dissertation yet, but you must then provide documentation that your dissertation has been submitted for evaluation before the position’s deadline.

In addition to a completed degree, your grades from the master’s degree must meet the enrolment requirements for the PhD program at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway (UiT). See UiT’s home page for more information https://www.uit.no/phd-en.

In addition, the position requires:

  • Strong numerical and statistical skills (e.g. Matlab).
  • Experience working in a marine biology or biogeochemistry laboratory.
  • Experience with phytoplankton identification.
  • Good writing skills.

It is an advantage if you have:

  • Experience in sampling and analysing samples for marine biology and biogeochemistry (Chl-a, POC&PON, biogenic silica, macronutrients, d18O, DIC&TA, primary production incubations).
  •  Experience with processing and studying in situ sea ice biology, biogeochemistry, and physics (Chl-a, POC&PON, biogenic silica, macronutrients, d18O, DOC, flow cytometry, DIC&TA, primary production incubations, temperature, salinity, brine volume, ice texture).
  • Experience in remote fieldwork in the Southern Ocean.
  • Experience working on sea ice.
  • Experience in using satellite derived data for sea ice and Chlorophyll-a concentration.
  • Good data analysis skills and basic knowledge of a programming language (e.g. R, python or Matlab)
  •  Scientific publications and/or reports

We are looking for you who are highly motivated to obtain a PhD and who are eager to learn and collaborate with the three supervisors from NPI, UiT and IMR. You are a positive, independent and solution-oriented person, which will be especially important when you are on cruises in the Southern Ocean, where adaptations to the marine environment are necessary to carry out good oceanographic research.

Good language skills in English are required. Our working language is Norwegian, so knowledge of the Norwegian language will carry weight in the assessment. If you do not speak Norwegian you are expected to attend language courses within the first two years of your employment since communicating in Norwegian will be important for you, as well as for the institute. We pay for courses that are completed successfully.

Working conditions on field work may be challenging and demand good health. Passing a health check in accordance with the institute's guidelines is a prerequisite for participating in field work and a valid contract of employment.

We offer
  • Interesting and exciting work tasks in a highly international research environment.
  • Salary according to the Norwegian State salary code 1017 PhD Fellow. 2% is deducted to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • Cruise and field pay according to national and local agreements.
  • Membership of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The membership includes many benefits, such as lifetime retirement pension, the right to financial support if you become ill or disabled, financial support for your family if something happens to you in our service, insurance against occupational injury/illness, as well as good mortgage terms.
  • Membership in our staff association, which among other things has its own cabin and facilitates various social gatherings.

We believe a diverse work force is a strength, and want employees with different skills, subject combinations, life experience and perspectives. If you are qualified for the position, you are welcome to apply regardless of your gender, age, cultural background, disabilities, or gaps in your CV. We also accommodate special needs in the workplace, if needed. There are special health requirements for this position that could limit our possibilities to accommodate special needs in the workplace.

Tromsø and the surrounding area have excellent conditions for experiencing the midnight sun, polar night, Northern lights, varied outdoor activities and a lively cultural and entertainment environment. Tromsø is situated at nearly 70°N with just about 75.000 residents. The city is an expanding centre for research, with numerous governmental and private research institutions and a major well-established university.
