Offer Description
Changing Arctic Research School

UiT The Arctic University of Norway kick-started a transdisciplinary research school "Changing Arctic" in August 2022, with PhD candidates and supervisors from all seven university faculties. The research school focuses on renewable energy, food security, health and welfare. “Changing Arctic” will collaborate with actors in private and public sector. The research outcomes will contribute to resilience and transformation in the Arctic and will thus operationalize Sustainable Development Goals.

The training will provide PhD candidates with knowledge, professional and transferable skills, and general competences that enables them to contribute to innovative and sustainable solutions for the Arctic. The research school will arrange courses, seminars, workshops, and excursions, and will organise secondments in private enterprises, NGOs, and public institutions. This is to ensure the relevance of project outcomes and enhance the employability of the PhD graduates. Read more about the research school Changing Arctic | UiT .

The position

This position is a fixed term position for a duration of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching (10%) and other duties such as secondments and interactions with the industry or the public sector (15%). The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The workplace is at UiT Campus Harstad. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. The Research School starts on the 1st of September 2024.

The position’s affiliation and field of research

In addition of being a member of the research school, the PhD fellow will be employed by the Department of Social Education (IVP) , Faculty of Health Sciences (Helsefak)  and work closely with researchers affiliated with The Arctic Centre for Welfare and Disability Research (ASVF ).

The PhD fellow will conduct research in the field of migrant integration, innovative educational models, and work inclusion in relation to the innovative education model “Prepp ”. The “Prepp” model offers a preparational year consisting of both school and internship for immigrants with weak Norwegian language skills before joining vocational training as health worker, industrial worker, or chef (as of 2024). Specifically, the doctoral project will provide insight into how innovative and sustainable education models can be adapted to the needs of the work life in the Arctic and contribute to sustaining and developing jobs in the region, hence also sustaining, and further-developing local societies. The PhD candidate will be free to choose the research focus of the doctoral project, such as employer perspective, work inclusion, school and education, the participants’ perspectives, sustaining rural populations, and more.

The PhD candidate will work closely with our collaboration partners at NAV (Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration), KS (Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities), and county municipalities in Troms and in Finnmark. The results of the doctoral project will be used to evolve new and existing educational programmes and initiatives to increase employment in various sectors in the Arctic, such as health, industry and service sectors.

Building on a cross-sectorial project with partners from both the public and private sectors, the PhD candidate will be encouraged to develop the project in the line of IVP’s and ASVF’s strong focus on and tradition of collaborative research aiming at enhancing equality and participation for vulnerable groups in the circumpolar north.
