Offer Description
The position

A PhD position is available at the Department of Pharmacy , Faculty of Health Sciences,  within the Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Group  on the project studying bacterial vesicles as realistic in vitro models for drug interactions with bacterial surfaces.

The position is available for commencement from August 2024 for a period of 4 years. The nominal length of the PhD program is 3 years. The 4th year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties for the Faculty of Health Sciences. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD program is a prerequisite for employment, and the program period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment.

The position is affiliated to the Department of Pharmacy, which consists of seven research groups: Drug Transport and Delivery  (which this PhD position is affiliated with), Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry , Pharmacology, Microbiology, Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacoepidemiology, Infection Biology, and Computational Pharmacology. The Department has 32 permanent positions. In addition, there is a variable number of PhD students, postdocs and part time positions. The Department is responsible for a bachelor’s and a master’s program in pharmacy. Teaching is given at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The project / The position’s field of research

The project is part of a joint project between the Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Group and the Drug Transport and Delivery Research Group. Exploring the potential to use bacterially produced vesicles as realistic models for interaction studies between antimicrobial hits and bacterial surfaces. The project will utilize a brand new 700 MHz NMR spectrometer, which will be installed in August 2024, together with ITC, DSC, SPR and other analytical tools to develop new tools and to study interactions under realistic conditions.

The aim is to develop methods more realistic than the current state-of-the-art for drug-lipid interactions. Thereby aiding the fight against antibiotics resistance development by providing better tools for Drug discovery initiatives, in both academia and the industry.

The group currently consist of two professors, three associate professors, two technicians and several PhD students. The members of the research group are also responsible for courses in medicinal chemistry and analytical chemistry at bachelor's, master's and PhD level. Qualifications

A requirement of the position is the completion of a master’s degree within chemistry, pharmacy or an equivalent direction; a master thesis within Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy will be considered particularly advantageous, but other spectroscopies or analytical chemistry is also beneficial.

Relevant research experience is considered advantageous, and the candidate should preferably have experience in working with with NMR Spectroscopy. The candidate must be able to work systematically, independently and can work in an interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants must document fluency of in English , both written and spoken, and be able to work in an international environment. Nordic applicants can document their English capabilities by attaching their high school diploma. Due to teaching duties, Scandinavian language speaking candidates will be preferred if otherwise equally qualified.

The successful applicant must fulfil the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD program  

In the assessment, the emphasis is on the applicant's potential to complete a research education, based on the master's thesis or equivalent, and any other scientific work. In addition, other experience of significance for the completion of the doctoral programme may be given consideration.

Emphasis will be placed on the communicative and collaborative skills, as well as personal suitability and the motivation and interest in the project. We are looking for candidates who:

As many people as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.


Admission to the PhD programme 

For employment in the PhD position, you must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health Sciences  and participate in organized doctoral studies within the employment period.

Admission normally requires:  

  • A bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS and a master's degree of 120 ECTS, or an integrated master's degree of 300 ECTS. 
  • A master's thesis with a scope corresponding to at least 30 ECTS for a master's degree of 120 ECTS. 
  • A master's thesis with a scope corresponding to at least 20 ECTS for an integrated master's degree of 300 ECTS. 

UiT normally accepts higher education from countries that are part of the Lisbon Recognition Convention.

Applicants must have a grade of C or better on the master's thesis and have a grade point average of C or better for the master's degree. A more detailed description of admission requirements can be found here .  

Applicants with a foreign education will be subjected to an evaluation of whether the educational background is equal to Norwegian higher education, following national guidelines from NOKUT . Depending on which country the education is from, one or two additional years of university education may be required to fulfil admission requirements, e.g. a 4-year bachelor's degree and a 2-year master's degree. 

If you are employed in the position, you will be provisionally admitted to the PhD programme. Application for final admission must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position.
