About the position
We have a vacancy for a PhD Candidate position at the Department of Marine Technology within the field of buckling and collapse mechanics of offshore wind turbines under accidental loads, e.g., ship collisions, earthquakes, strong wind gusts, extreme wave impacts, etc.
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
Offshore wind turbines are at the forefront of the green transition from classical fossil fuel to clean and decarbonizing energy. The number of offshore wind turbine installations is expected to grow at record speeds in the coming decades. Offshore wind turbines are likely to experience extreme conditions in their service lifetime, such as accidental ship collisions, earthquakes, strong wind gusts, extreme wave impacts, etc. Such accidental loads may cause undesirable consequences such as structural damage, flooding and in the worst case, lead to platform collapse, capsizing and fatalities. It is therefore the goal of this project to investigate the buckling and collapse mechanics of offshore wind turbines under accidental loads and to propose rational procedures to design against such accidental loads.
The work of this PhD position primarily focuses on structural mechanics but will also contain some cross-disciplinary work including hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, where the candidate is expected to collaborate with colleagues with different disciplines.
You will report to the Head of the Department and your supervising professor.
