About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The Department of Public Health and Nursing has a temporary position available as a PhD candidate in health services research. The project, titled “Sustainable Local Mental Health Care” is an interdisciplinary collaborative project with participants from NTNU, St. Olav's University Hospital, and various national and international partners.

We aim to enhance our understanding of effective mental health treatments, particularly in the context of general practice in Norway. The successful candidate will contribute to investigating the aftermath for patients facing rejected specialist care referrals, examining potential impacts and the role of GPs in such scenarios.Utilizing innovative quantitative approaches, the candidate will play a key role in our team of researchers (including other PhD candidates), GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, user-representatives and decision-makers, with the overarching goal of improving mental healthcare delivery and resource optimization.

The aim of the PhD project is to provide evidence about management of adults with mental health problems at the intersect between municipal- and secondary healthcare. We will rely on rigorous quantitative methods applying novel analytical designs mirroring randomised experiments using observational data from relevant health and social security registries and databases.

The PhD candidate’s research project will be developed and completed in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of researches  (REGFORSK ). The candidate will receive close supervision in collaboration with clinical, epidemiological, statistical, and econometric expertise.

Your immediate leader is Johan Håkon Bjørngaard.

Duties of the position

• Conducting quantitative research using large-scale individual-level registry data
• Performing instrumental variable, and multivariable regression analyses
• Writing scientific manuscripts and publishing in international peer-reviewed journals
• Presenting findings at national and international conferences
• Participation in the PhD programme at NTNU

Required selection criteria

• You must have a professionally relevant background in social sciences, statistics, econometrics, preferably with experience from research on health-related topics or health professional background at master level (medicine, psychology, and others) with particular experience in quantitative methods.
• Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
• Good written and oral English language skills.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

Preferred selection criteria

• Solid competence in basic statistical methods
• Knowledge about the healthcare sector in Norway (or countries with similar healthcare systems)
• Knowledge about mental healthcare and how it is provided
• Experience using STATA and/or R for statistical analyses
• Skills in Norwegian or similar Scandinavian languages is an advantage, but not a requirement

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. 
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Medicine and Health sciences  within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding from the norwegian research council. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

We will take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint work, you must enclose a short description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
