About the job

The rate of change is intensifying for maritime organizations, which cause rapid changes in the organizational landscape. Over the years, we have witnessed new organizational constellations – where companies have increased their use of outsourcing as a business strategy or entered new interorganizational collaboration due to new competence demands. These changes raise important questions related to how these maritime organizations operate – internally as well as towards external partners.

This PhD call seeks candidates motivated to advance our knowledge of new forms for interorganizational collaboration. Key questions relate to motivations for outsourcing, their considerations in respect to process control and HSEQ, as well as in depth investigation into how this collaboration changes work processes (including coordination, communication, and decision making), ownership of data, and competence management strategies for maritime actors. Increased use of Third-party shipping management contracts is one relevant example, where ship owners use independent organizations to manage their vessels. Another is the processes involved in developing business intelligence systems opening for new internal and external patterns of integration. Candidates interested in the topic, are also welcome to define their own case focus.

The PhD candidate will be located at NTNU in Ålesund, in the interdisciplinary environment at the Department of ocean operation and civil engineering. The group the PhD candidate will belong to has a vivid research environment looking into operative dimensions of change in the maritime industry, such as developments within autonomy, remote ship operations, situational awareness, and management challenges due to digitalization. In line with the strategy of the department, the candidate will be expected to consider the value of using NTNU’s simulator labs in the project.
