The Centre for Care Research at NTNU in Gjøvik in Norway has a vacancy for a PhD Candidate in Health and Care Services Research – “Variations in utilisation and costs in municipal in-patient acute care units”. 

Applications are invited for a three-year position as PhD Research Candidate, whereby the goal is completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The position is connected to the ongoing project “Variations in trajectories, utilisation and costs in Norwegian municipal in-patient acute care units (MipAC)” (funded by the Research Council of Norway, project number 324959 ). 

Supervised by scholars at NTNU in Gjøvik and the University of Exeter, the PhD candidate will conduct a realist review of admission avoidance intermediate care (AAIC) schemes and carry out a cost analysis of the MipAC scheme in Norway. 

The Candidate’s main place of work will be NTNU in Gjøvik, but it is expected that she/he will spend 9 months at the ESMI research group  at the University of Exeter during the course of the PhD. 

Duties of the position

  • Collaborate with supervisors and research team on the development and execution of the planned research in the MipAC project and contribute to deliverables in the project.
  • Publish in international journals and conferences in relevant fields.
  • Participate in PhD courses and complete coursework and requirements connected to the doctoral programme at NTNU. 

The successful candidate must:

  • have education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • have a master’s degree in economics, social sciences or health sciences. 
  • have a strong academic background from previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B (2:1) or better compared with NTNU's grading scale .
  • have relevant experience with use of quantitative/statistical methods and practical experience with spreadsheets and statistical software such as SPSS, STATA or R.
  • have fluent oral and written English communication skills.
  • meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program . 

Preferred selection criteria

  • We will prioritise applicants with education and experience in health economics/economics who can demonstrate particularly relevant experience with and command of statistical analysis and techniques.  
  • It would be an advantage if applicants have good written and oral Norwegian skills, but it is not a requirement.
