Offer Description
This is NTNU
NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.
At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.
You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.
About the job
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
We are looking for you - a skillful PhD candidate to further strengthen and develop the in-house chemistries and methods to produce lighter ceramic-metallic (cermet) powders for thermal spray and additive manufacturing (AM). Currently cermet powders used in thermal spray and AM utilize heavy metals (such as tungsten) and metals that come from conflict zones (such as cobalt). Our chemical process can overcome these challenges by going beyond those chemistries. Lighter cermet materials performing equally or better than current technologies are much needed in a world where energy savings are crucial. Also avoiding conflicts and child exploitation is crucial for a sustainable material production value chain. You will work on a bottom-up process to produce cermet powder at lab scale. The powder produced will later be used to produce thermal spray coatings and AM parts that will be tested for their performance (e.g. corrosion, friction, wear).
Your immediate leader is Professor.
Duties of the position
- this project requires the use of chemistry lab and powder processing lab (from crushing to classification of powder material and heat treatment duties of the position)
- write and defend a PhD thesis
- take part in the mandatory PhD research education programme
- write and communicate research results in a comprehensive manner both for journals and conferences
Required selection criteria
- you must have a professionally relevant background in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials engineering or mechanical engineering
- your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
- you must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
- you must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
- documented experience in chemistry of cermet materials or powder production methods
- documented experience in the production and characterization of ceramic powder material
- documented skills and knowledge in use of chemistry lab and powder processing lab
- good written and oral English language skills
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
Preferred selection criteria
- previous experience in working with powder material for thermal spray or additive manufacturing, preferably with ceramic or cermet materials
- previous experience with powder processing techniques such as crushing, milling, classification, spray drying
Personal characteristics
- take responsibility for the progress of the project
- able to work independently
- good communication and presentation skills
- you can collaborate closely with other members of the research group
- you must be diligent and able to show initiative on behalf of your own work
Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.
