About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering at NTNU in Gjøvik seeks a PhD candidate for a circular economy and wood-based construction position. This position aims to optimize circular value chains for wood-based materials by promoting sustainable wood use and ensuring transparent material tracking using digital technologies. The project seeks to improve sustainability, traceability, and efficiency in the circular built environment and meet the demand for recyclable materials by implementing a circular economy in the wood-based construction industry. The goal of the position is for the candidate to obtain a doctoral degree and improve circularity in the wood-based construction industry. The duration of the PhD position is three years.

The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering develops innovative and sustainable solutions for society. The Department is divided into four subject groups, each with its research fields and involved in interdisciplinary research collaboration. This position will be part of the department's subject group for the Built Environment and Geomatics and the research group focused on studying Digital Twins for a sustainable built environment. Currently, the group has several national and EU projects on the circular built environment, with several PhDs.  The group has built a solid national and international network. Thus, the candidate will become part of an active research environment throughout the duration of the study and potential exchange with international partners.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.


Duties of the position
  • Conduct high-quality research on digital twin for a circular built environment.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop circular wood value chain optimization through digital technologies.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data to derive meaningful insights.
  • Actively participate in designing, implementing, and evaluating circular economy solutions for wood-based construction.
  • Engage and communicate with academic and industry partners and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the dissemination and outreach of the research outcomes through public media, conferences, and publications.
  • Submit an application for admission to the PhD program at NTNU no later than 3 months after the employment.
  • Report regularly research progress in agreement with the supervisors.
  • Undertake the necessary courses (30 ETC) for the PhD program.
  • Contribute to the academic environment at the department, faculty, and NTNU.

Required selection criteria
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in  civil engineering, architecture, computer science, and geomatics.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by 01.08.2024.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program (link)
  • You should have experience with BIM and data analytics.
  • The candidate is expected to be fluent in written and oral English language skills. Candidates from universities outside Scandinavia and English-speaking countries are kindly requested to document English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)). TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test), IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5, CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 


Preferred selection criteria
  • An interest in wood-based construction, circular economy, and/or construction processes.
  • Have experience with Unreal Engine (UE), and blockchain.
  • Have experience with digital product passport.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme (Link to website, if applicable) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
