Job description

The Department of Mathematics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam welcomes applications for the position of a PhD student who also wants to contribute to the educational program of the department as a junior lecturer (and thus acquire teaching experience). The fully-funded position is for six years.

The preferred starting date is between 1 September and 1 December 2021. 

You will spend 50% of your time working on your PhD research. The research can be in any area of applied mathematics that falls within the expertise available in the department.
In your application you should indicate who you would like your PhD advisor to be (it is essential to contact her/him before applying), and mention the research topic you want to pursue.

The remainder of your time is devoted to educational activities (40%), such as lecturing, supervising internships, working with students to improve their academic skills, initiating and participating in innovation projects related to educational improvement, as well as coordination and organizational tasks (10%) related to the educational programs. The mathematics department hosts two state-of-the-art bachelor and master programs in Mathematics and Business Analytics. The precise tasks will be determined in consultation, taking into account your background and interests as well as the needs of the department. You will also acquire a basic qualification in teaching (‘BKO’).

Your duties

  • doing research towards writing a PhD thesis (50% of your time)
  • teaching (40% of your time), as well as some organizational activities (10%)

Requirements
  • a (prospective) MSc. degree in Applied Mathematics or Business Analytics with a strong mathematical component (or an equivalent thereof) with excellent results
  • some experience in teaching (e.g., as a TA)
  • a desire to develop both your research and teaching skills
  • strong communication skills in English

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of € 2,790 (at the start) and a maximum of € 3,491 (in the sixth year). The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 0,8 - 1,0 FTE.

The Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics strives for excellence in research. The department balances pure mathematical research with mathematical research motivated by applications. Researchers in the department are on one hand active at a fundamental and theoretical level, and, on the other hand, work on applications with links to business, the sciences, and societal issues. The department has a strong international research staff with expertise in dynamical systems, geometry and algebra, as well as in stochastics (statistics, data analytics, probability).  

The department offers bachelor and master programs in mathematics and in business analytics, as well as a master program in stochastics and financial mathematics. In addition, the department provides mathematics courses for other programs of the Faculty of Science, for programs of other faculties in the university, and for Amsterdam University College.
