The Department of Mathematics at Radboud University (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated PhD candidate to work on a PhD project on homotopy theory.
You will work on this project under the supervision of Dr Steffen Sagave. The position is funded for four years and has a light teaching load (10%). You will be encouraged to participate in relevant conferences, workshops and seminars, and to communicate your findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a PhD degree from Radboud University. Members from groups that are underrepresented in Mathematics are particularly encouraged to apply.


Profile
  • You hold a Master's degree in Mathematics (or an equivalent degree), completed before the start date.
  • You have a strong background in algebraic topology or a related area.
  • You have excellent writing and communication skills.

Algebraic topology is one of the research areas of the Department of Mathematics at Radboud University. The field is represented by Dr Magdalena Kedziorek and Dr Steffen Sagave.

The department has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with researchers in related areas including algebraic and arithmetic geometry, differential geometry, operator algebras, and representation theory.

The department employs the right balance of senior and junior staff, as well as of Dutch and international researchers, and organises various research seminars and informal events throughout the year. Moreover, the algebraic topologists at Radboud University are part of a larger network of Dutch algebraic topologists who regularly interact and meet for seminars and other events. The Department of Mathematics has more than 20 PhD candidates, several of whom work in algebraic topology and related areas.

We offer
  • We will give you a temporary employment contract (0.8 FTE 5- year contract - 1.0 FTE 4- year contract) of 1,5 years, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, your contract will be extended by 2.5 years (4-year contract) or 3.5 years (5-year contract).
  • You will receive a starting salary of €2,770 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, which will increase to €3,539 from the fourth year onwards (salary scale P ).
  • You will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% end-of-year bonus. 
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Support Service .   • You will receive extra days off. With full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the statutory 20.
