PhD position in Chemical Biology

Updated: over 1 year ago
Location: Ireland,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 23 Dec 2022

The Rubini Group in the School of Chemistry at University College Dublin (UCD) is seeking one Ph.D. student in the field of Chemical Biology to work on Enzyme Engineering. This Ph.D. studentship would start ideally in January 2023 (possible start also in May 2023) and is for a period of four years.

The scholarship consists of a stipend of €18,500 per annum for up to 4 years and is funded by the School of Chemistry. Fees (EU level) will be also covered. There will be a requirement to teach in undergraduate laboratories and tutorials as part of the scholarship.

Environmental protection is one of the biggest challenges in our modern society. Therefore, the employment of more sustainable approaches for the synthesis of useful compounds are a priority both in academia and in different industrial sectors. Amine Transaminases are extremely promising biocatalysts for the synthesis of chiral amino compounds. The goal of this project is to engineer the active site pocket of selected transaminases by employing non-natural amino acids to expand the substrate scope of the enzymes and to enhance their catalytic activity.

Applications are welcome from students from Ireland/EU with, or expecting to gain, a first class Honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Chemical Biology or other relevant scientific discipline. In particular, candidates with experience in protein engineering and enzymatic characterization are strongly encouraged to apply. The position will be filled once the suitable candidate has been identified so early applications are advised.

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, detailed academic transcripts and the contact details for at least two academic referees, and should be sent by email to Dr. Marina Rubini ([email protected] ).
