Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) is a non-university research institute and a member of the Leibniz Association. The IFW employs approximately 600 people and one focus is on the training of young scientists (m/f/d) besides enhancing fundamental and applied research development. At the highest international level, the IFW operates modern materials science on a scientific basis and makes the obtained results useful for the economy. The complex and interdisciplinary research work is carried out within the IFW by five scientific institutes, which are supported by a highly developed technical infrastructure. The IFW supports its employees (m/f/d) in reconciling work and family life and regularly submits to the berufundfamilie®.

The Institute for Complex Materials (IKM) – of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research – IFW Dresden – is looking for a highly motivated early stage researcher to join the research group of “Chemistry of Functional Materials” as

PhD student (m/f/d)

starting at 1.10.2022 with 20 hours per week. The contract is limited to three years.

Research project:

Within the IFW excellence project “Nanomaterial-based Biosensors for Pandemics”, your research task will comprise the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel metal-based nanoparticles to enhance the sensor surface area, improve its electrochemical performance, and tune the plasmonic property for biosensing and photothermal purposes. In collaboration with chemists, biomedical engineers, and materials scientists of the team, you will establish a fundamental understanding of the nanostructure formation mechanisms and of the interfacial processes upon (bio)molecule immobilization, as well as develop concepts for exploiting these nanostructures towards biosensing and photothermal applications.

Your profile:

All candidates (m/f/d), with a strong background and successful Diploma or Master in the area of chemistry, physics or materials science, are encouraged to apply. Knowledge in nanomaterials, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, biochemistry and materials characterization methods as well as a good command of the English language and basic German skills is desired. Readiness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary and international team is expected.

We offer:

The salary is according to the German tariff TV-L (EG 13). The employment is starting on 1.10.2022.

The institute promotes the professional equality between all genders. The IFW would like to increase the proportion of women in science. Qualified women are therefore explicitly invited to apply. Severely disabled applicants (m/f/d) are given preferential treatment if they have the same qualifications.
