Within the Faculty of Medicine and at the ‘Göttingen campus’, the Department of Medical Statistics (Chair: Professor Tim Friede) offers a statistical advisory service and teaching in the fields of biostatistics as well as bioinformatic analysis of clinical and genomic data. Members of the Department also conduct research in the fields of adaptive designs of clinical trials, meta-analysis / evidence synthesis, survival analysis, clinical epidemiology and computational statistics.

For the participation in a methodological project in the field of statistical planning of translational research (funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)), we are looking for a PhD student.

Focussing on translational research the project aims to provide tools for sample size planning and adaptive designs including sample size re-estimation and group sequential designs based on nonparametric methods. These tools are of special interest in preclinical stages, where the planning phase of any trial must be conducted to meet current standards set by the 3R’s principle of animal experimentation “Replacement, Reduction, Refinement” and by animal welfare authorities. The project is conducted in cooperation with the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Professor Frank Konietschke).

Responsibilities:

  • Development of statistical methodologies in the field of experimental design / clinical trial design, Bayesian and nonparametric statistics as part of a research project
  • Implementation of the new methods in statistical software (preferably in R)
  • Publication of the results and their presentation at scientific conferences

Requirements:

  • Master degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Biometry or a related field
  • Interest in the development and application of statistical methods
  • Very good knowledge in statistical software packages (especially in R)
  • High proficiency in English
  • High level of motivation, ability to work in a team, proactive personality, scientific curiosity and willingness to learn
