doctoral researcher (m/f/d)

(65%, salary bracket TV-L E 13).

The Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS) researches the complex relationships between social change and spatial development. The research group „Social Innovations in Rural Areas“, to be newly established on 1.1.2022, investigates processes of emergence, establishment and spread of novel ideas and practices in rural areas, which are referred to as social innovations. The research group contributes to research on transformation processes in rural areas. It analyses novel solutions with which rural actors address central challenges in areas such as local supply, mobility, health care, work, education, culture and communication.

The candidate should work in the sub-project „Peripheralised rural areas. Digitalisation and the construction of space“ within the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre 1265 „Re-figuration of Spaces“ and investigate digitalisation processes and rural transformation in Chile and China (https://sfb1265.de/en/projects/planned-subprojects-for-the-applied-for-second-funding-period-2022-2025/ ). He/she should have a track record in the study of rural spaces and/or digitalisation of action.

Your tasks will include:

  • Investigation of digitalisation processes, digitalised action and changing constructions of space in rural China and Chile
  • Preparation of methodological instruments and collection of empirical data
  • Analysis and interpretation of collected data as well as theory building
  • Publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journals and writing the dissertation

Your prerequisites:

You have a very good Master's degree in sociology, human geography, urban and regional planning or a related discipline. Knowledge of social science theories related to the above-mentioned subject area, knowledge and own experience in qualitative empirical social research are essential. Very good German and English skills as well as a good knowledge of written and spoken Spanish are essential.
