Postdoc
Department of Chemistry
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering two postdoc fellowships in organic synthesis commencing in February 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. Both positions are two years (with current funding).
Description of the scientific environment
The research group headed by Assoc. Prof. Michael Pittelkow at the Department of Chemistry is looking for smart, creative and independent postdoc candidates to work on project concerning 1) the synthesis and characterization of conjugated helicene molecules and 2) the synthesis and studies of new cyclic carbon allotropes and carbon nanotubes. A strong background in organic synthesis chemistry is a prerequisite to be considered for the position.
In the research group we focus on a range of scientific questions. We are interested in both supramolecular chemistry and in aromatic chemistry. Almost all activities in the group are centered around organic synthesis, and we offer a strong interdisciplinary work environment.
Project description
This projects are funded by DFF and the Villum foundation. The goal of the procjects are:
1) To prepare long fully conjugated helicenes and apply these structures in nano-sized molecular machines (for previous synthetic work, see: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2019, 18419-18423) and in the preparation of chiral OLEDs. The work on molecular machines will be conducted in collaboration with Prof. Tal from the Weizmann institute and Prof. Hedegård from the Niels Bohr Institute, and the work concerning OLEDs will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Brock-Nannestad at the Department of Chemistry. The project will also address the challenge of preparing the first fully conjugated chiral poly-helicene, and further synthetic work will address the antiaromatic nature of [8]circulenes (for previous work, see: Chem. Eur. J., 2020, 4935-4940 and Nature, 2019, 511-515).
2) To prepare large odd-member carbon rings and study their properties using a range of spectroscopy (NMR, ESR, UV etc.) and to attempt polymerization to form new types of carbon-nanotube structures. It is also the idea to develop mew synthetic methodology for the formation of polyynes during this project.
Principal supervisor is Assoc. prof. Michael Pittelkow,Department of chemistry, E-mail: [email protected], Direct Phone: 30545509.
The postdoc’s duties will include research within organic chemistry as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.
