At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment a PhD stipend is available within the doctoral programme Civil Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 August 2022 in Aalborg


Job description

The construction industry is a major contributor to the global waste problem. The construction industry has many documented problems concerning incorrect disposal of waste (e.g. illegal dumping, litter pollution, incorrectly sorting). Therefore, this research project focuses on improving the current recycling level by improving the general waste behavior as an approach to improve the on-site sorting of construction waste.

The PhD project focuses on improving waste behavior in on-site construction by optimizing how waste disposal is managed. The project has two focus areas: (a) to reduce the amount of unsorted and abandoned waste and (b) to optimize waste management by accounting for human behavior.

We are looking for a candidate within the field of construction management. The applicant is expected to have a relevant education within the field of construction management, practical experience within the research field is regarded as an advantages. The ideal candidate has documented:

  • Knowledge and experience with waste management
  • Knowledge and experience with data analysis
  • Knowledge and experience with statistical analysis and Mathematics
  • Experience with programming languages e.g. MATLAB, Python
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and modeling skills.
  • Experience with writing scientific papers
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English and preferable also Danish

Moreover, experience with teaching and supervision including problem-based-learning is regarded as an advantage, as the candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision at the Construction Management education at Aalborg University. Teaching area will cover various aspects of Project Management (e.g. waste management, organizational theory, collaboration, logistics, resource management, work environment, decision-making, law etc.).

As part of the project, the candidate is expected to have a six-month research stay at Deakin University in Australia. You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Søren Munch Lindhard [email protected]  concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Agreement

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 28 June 2019 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
