PhD Stipend in Fermented Ingredients

The successful candidate will work within the EU HORIZON project SEAMARK and the NNF funded project RETOX-PRO. Both projects revolve around the microbial fermentation of seaweed and plants, respectively, with the aim to develop safe, tasty, and healthy ingredients for food and feed. The position will include the setup and optimization of microbial(both bacterial and fungal) fermentations, including the statistical design of experiments, the analysis of the fermented materials by physico-chemical methods(LC-MS, NMR) and specific functional assays, as well as the assessment of the beneficial effect of the fermented materials on recipients’ health. The position will include the evaluation, interpretation, reporting and dissemination of experimental results, entering a constructive dialogue with other project participants, both from industry and academia. Short and medium-duration visits at the sites of other project partners will be a part of the position. The position also comes with the obligation to teach, mainly within Biotechnology and Medical Biotechnology, but also in other study programs at AAU. The position also requires an active participation in the research environment and the laboratory community. The position is attached to the Section of Medical Biotechnology.

Requirements:

  • A master's degree in biotechnology or a closely related field is mandatory. A degree in Food Science and/or Technology is considered an advantage. Experience with seaweed or plant fermentation is considered an advantage. Experience within NMR spectroscopy is considered an advantage.
  • The applicant must be interested in working in an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills are a requirement.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Wages and employment

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 15 December 2021 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
