Job description

In connection with the EU Horizon project I3LUNG: Integrative science, Intelligent data platform for Individualized LUNG cancer care with Immunotherapy, we seek a PhD student that will oversee the specifications, design, and development of a cloud platform to handle the storage and processing of sensitive clinical data.

The aim of the I3LUNG project is to develop AI-based tools to assist in improving survival and quality of life, preventing undue toxicity, and reducing treatment costs for lung cancer patients. I3LUNG adopts a two-pronged approach: setting up a transnational platform of available data from hundreds of patients in order to validate the AI models, and generating a multi-omics prospective data collection in a subset of these Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients. A psychological study will help in defining the impact of AI-guided decisions on patients, eliciting their preference, and physicians comparing AI with Human Intuition. The final goal is the construction of a novel integrated AI-assisted Data Storage and Elaboration Platform backed up by Trustworthy Explainable AI methodology, ensuring its accessibility and ease of use by healthcare providers and patients alike.

The candidate will contribute with novel anonymization techniques, standardization of open science data, and development of machine learning algorithms for data processing, among other topics. The aim will be publishing several research papers at top-tier data mining, data management, or machine learning conferences based on the research works. Within the area, the position comes with many freedoms in terms of the specific research direction, methodology, and approaches taking the specific project needs into consideration.

Requirements:

The candidate is required to have a master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, software, data science, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field. Due to the project’s interdisciplinary nature, the candidate is required to have a strong background in algorithm design, machine learning, and software design and development. Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English are essential.

Application:

The application must contain:

  • A cover letter of max. 1 page, including (i) motivation for applying, (ii) preferred starting date (specifically if other than July 15, 2022), and (iii) a brief explanation of the applicant’s background.
  • A research statement (project description). This description should outline the applicant’s thoughts and ideas on possible research directions within the context of the topic outlined above.
  • CV
  • Diploma and transcripts of records
  • Two reference letters or contact of two references
  • Other relevant information
  • You may obtain further information from Assoc. Prof. Sokol Kosta, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: +4599403662, email: [email protected] , concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
