At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a PhD stipend in 6G Short Range Subnetwork for Extreme Connectivity is available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipend is open for appointment from October 1, 2022, or soon as possible thereafter. In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.


Job description

Future 6th Generation (6G) radio systems are expected to bridge the gap between digital and physical worlds by supporting services such as holographic presence, extreme virtual/augmented reality with tactile feedback and high accuracy sensing.  It is visioned that 6G will consist of a set of specialized subnetworks, where one of them is likely to be a “6G short range subnetwork for extreme communication”. This subnetwork will provide a localized versatile wireless connection between devices such as; XR equipment, glucose monitoring and muscle haptic implants on and inside humans, equipment inside intelligent machines/robots, or even equipment inside vehicles and airplanes where it may replace the existing wired network normally connecting the engine controls, parking sensors and anti-lock brake system.

As these applications sets extreme communication service requirements, such as multi-Gbps data rates, <100 us latencies with a reliability of seven-nine nines, as well as low cost devices, it is required to develop a new wireless technology designated for this extremely reliably short range communication subnetwork. It is visioned that this subnetwork will consist of a access point (connected to 6G) that will manage the subnetwork connectivity to a set of devices including lower cost devices. This study will focus on the air interface design and procedures for this new short range communication subnetwork technology and may include;

  • Procedures for how a 6G short range subnetwork access point may proactively sense and manage its subnetwork devices, i.e. before service violations occur due to changes in the wireless channel and interference (including from malicious jammers).
  • Radio spectrum sharing techniques such that a short-range subnetwork access point may coexist with other (higher power) 6G technologies (such as 6G Sidelink, 6G unlicensed).
  • Procedures allowing nearby subnetworks to efficiently access the radio channel while complying with their service requirements. This may include procedures suitable for both constrained and more sophisticated devices.

The study will use a combination of analytical and simulation methods. The study will explore candidate solutions based on heuristic algorithms/protocols design as well as machine learning based solutions.

A candidate for this PhD study should have the following qualifications;

  • M.Sc. candidate with a degree in wireless communications
  • mathematical and analytical skills;
  • experience in programming, at least in C++, Phython or Matlab;
  • creative mindset and curiosity to research and develop new solutions in an international environment with highly skilled colleagues;

The study will be conducted in close collaboration with the Nokia Bell Labs site in Aalborg and in cooperation with several of their research teams worldwide.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
