PhD Scholarship in Structure, Architecture, and Engineering (7-22043)

The Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design at Aalborg University, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship within the study program of Media, Architecture & Design. The scholarship is focusing on the exploration of the relation between structures and architecture. The scholarship is available from 1st of September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology, CREATE is unique in the Danish context as it provides opportunities for powerful interdisciplinary research which integrate creativity, engineering, and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design, and interactive media (https://www.create.aau.dk/). The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

Job description

The key theme of this PhD scholarship is the tectonic relations between structures and architecture. The position is inherently based on trans-disciplinary theoretical and applied fields as it is placed at the intersection between architecture, structural engineering, advanced computation, and technology driven fabrication. You have a background within either architecture or engineering and experience with research in integrated design environments. The position is oriented towards the design fields, but with a clear focus on engineering and technological dimensions. With a background in engineering, we expect that you will pursue explorations into architectural design principles and vice versa if you have a background from architecture, the PhD study will be oriented towards engineering principles. In general, you are versatile in integrating architecture and structure based on an in depth understanding of the principles of the flow of forces in structures and constructions as well as in principles related to an in-depth architectural understanding.

Within the overall theme of structures and architecture the PhD could concern (but are not excluded to) deal with:

  • Tectonic relations between structures and architecture across scale and time, herein development of novel viable construction principles, material technologies, and computational design processes.
  • The synergetic potentials of tectonic correspondences between the structural principles and climatic principles in architecture and engineering – exploring how the climatic principles (insulation, heating, ventilation systems etc.) that have become increasingly decisive in construction processes driven by the unescapable need to lower energy consumption can be developed as spatial gestures.
  • Study of innovative structural morphologies both from a theoretical and practical point of view providing the basis for integration of form and shape of a structure and the relations between form, forces, and material at an early stage in the architectural design process.

With the vacancy we invite qualified project proposals, research questions and methods to explore new tectonic correspondences between structures and architecture and we invite applicants to formulate a short "project description" (2-5 pages), which is a suggestion for a PhD project within the theme mentioned above. This project description should include: one or more research questions, a study design including methods and theories for the research project and a time schedule.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Lea Holst Laursen, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, phone: 99407174, email: llhl@create.aau.dk
concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Sofie Pia Jensen, The Doctoral School at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: [email protected] , phone: +45 9940 3478.

Online application - some good advice

Aalborg University uses an electronic recruitment system for receiving applications. Towards the bottom in the respective job advertisement you will find a link, which you need to use when applying for the position. Before uploading your application it is important that you have all relevant documentation ready in a Word or PDF format, as you need to upload all material at the same time. You cannot leave the application and return to it a couple of hours later without having to start over.

The system does not support ZIP or images files. Filenames can only contain numbers and letters, and each document must take up no more than 20 MB.
If you experience technical problems, we encourage you to try again. If the technical problems, contrary to expectation, cannot be solved, please contact the member of staff listed as the contact person in the job advertisement.
