Job Description

We are looking for a PhD student to join our Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Grant "Energy Materials for the GUT (EMGUT)."
We seek a motivated PhD candidate to leverage microelectronics in the development of advanced ingestible devices for the gastrointestinal tract. These devices will harness microelectronics for wireless communication, controlling sensing mechanisms, sampling the gut environment, and releasing drugs. A significant aspect of the research will involve repurposing (hacking) consumer microelectronics for EMGUT applications. We intend to explore a range of consumer electronics to meet the project's needs, including, but not limited to, wireless headsets, smart home devices, and smartwatches.
This scholarship presents a unique opportunity to work in a highly creative, collaborative, and ambitious environment. The selected candidate will contribute to the IDUN section at the DTU Department of Health Technology, under the leadership of Prof. Anja Boisen. IDUN is recognized for its cross-disciplinary research, comprising over 40 members dedicated to the creation of micro- and nanotechnology-based sensors, detection systems, and drug delivery devices. Join us in advancing the frontier of health technology through innovative research.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for the exploration, evaluation, and application of consumer microelectronics in the development of ingestible devices. Your research will cover a broad spectrum of technologies, including but not limited to embedded wireless communication, battery management, digital-to-analog converters, analog-to-digital converters, microprocessors, transducers, and amplifiers for managing sensing signals, tracking positions within the gut, sampling microbiota, and triggering drug release. This endeavor will be conducted in close collaboration with your peers at DTU Health Tech, ensuring a synergistic approach to research.
Your responsibilities will include the characterization of devices and conducting in vivo experiments with appropriate animal models. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical and mechatronics engineering, coupled with a curious and open-minded approach to creatively utilizing (hacking) consumer electronics. We are in search of an individual who is highly independent, self-motivated, and flourishes in a collaborative, multidisciplinary academic environment. You should be adept at propelling the project forward, mentoring students, and meeting ambitious goals with a proactive and committed attitude.
The work will be carried out within the framework of IDUN. In IDUN, our motto is ‘bringing science to life’ and we believe in openness, inclusiveness, having ambitions, making a difference and collaboration.
You will play a role in the sensing part of the research section, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as biology, microfabrication, pharmaceutical science, and polymer science. The project is highly interdisciplinary, and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating your work with your colleagues.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof. Anja Boisen and Assoc. Prof. Edwin En-Te Hwu.
