PhD scholarship in Quantum Information Security and Randomness Certification – DTU Physics
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description

Are you excited about information security and the novel possibilities opened up by quantum technology? Are you fascinated by quantum physics and intriguing phenomena such as quantum entanglement, nonlocality, and indeterminism in quantum measurements?
At the Section for Quantum Physics and Information Technology, we are seeking an excellent and highly motivated PhD candidate to work on the theory of novel quantum randomness certification protocols. In this project, we will connect fundamental physics to information security, establishing the security analysis of new, cutting-edge devices which can be implemented with quantum optical technology and will be realised in the lab. The theoretical work will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental colleagues and engineers at DTU Physics as well as other academic and industry actors, including the University of Ghent, the Danish National Metrology Institute, and DTU spin-off Alea Quantum Technologies.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Section for Quantum Physics and Information Techology (QPIT) of DTU Physics, which hosts a wide range of activities in both fundamental quantum information science and applied quantum technology, including the national Centre of Excellence for Macroscopic Quantum States (bigQ). In particular, the candidate will be part of the theory subgroup headed by Prof. Jonatan Bohr Brask and the quantum cryptography activities headed by Prof. Tobias Gehring.
Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated student who will be exploring both the development of new quantum-optical setups for randomness certification and the derivation of rigorous security proofs, quantifying the extractable randomness from real devices. A particular focus will be on devices that need not be fully trusted, providing an extremely high level of security in the so-called device-independent and semi-device-independent regimes.
You will be using tools and techniques from quantum information theory, theoretical quantum optics, and numerical optimisation to:

  • Develop new optical schemes for quantum random-number generation (QRNG) that are readily implementable yet provide strong cryptographic security.
  • Analyse new and existing QRNG protocols in order to provide thorough and reliable security proofs, applicable under realistic operating conditions.
  • Implement efficient methods for online randomness extraction to be used with new, high-speed QRNG devices.

We expect you to have an excellent academic record, to be curious and exited about quantum physics and information technology, and to be collaborative and able to work in a team. Prior experience with quantum information theory and quantum optics is an advantage. Good coding skills, e.g. in Python, and experience with convex optimisation is also an advantage.
Good communication skills in both spoken and written English are a requirement. You are expected to teach and supervise BSc and MSc students.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of applications will be carried out by Professors Jonatan Bohr Brask and Tobias Gehring together with Head of Section and Centre leader Professor Ulrik L. Andersen.
We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice.
