Job Description

Are you fascinated by deep learning and interested in utilizing AI to generate images, such as diffusion models? Do you also have a strong desire to make a tangible impact on society? If so, this PhD opportunity may be the perfect fit for you.
You can have both in this PhD, where you will be doing cutting-edge research aimed at generating novel images of skin lesions, such as skin cancer, as part of a research team collaborating closely with likeminded computer vision researchers in addition to doctors.
The overall goal of the project is to better educate teledermatologists and to provide them with decision support, which will ultimately save lives and reduce unnecessary procedures.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your task is to develop novel generative models that can generate images of skin lesions. The generated images will be used both to better educate dermatologists on very specific types of skin lesions, where only few real images exist, and to provide decision support when diagnosing new images, by predicting how a specific skin lesion will look in the future. The results of your research will be put in the hands of a large existing userbase of dermatologists during the project.
Furthermore, the models developed throughout this PhD have applications reaching far beyond this project, such as in forensic face age progression and other medical domains.
Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Do research in generative models, specifically diffusion models.
  • Do research in generative models for creating images in domains with limited available data.
  • Do research in generative models for creating counterfactuals.
  • Do research in generative models for skin lesion ageing.
  • Coordinate and validate models with clinical partners and Melatech.
  • Write scientific papers and present research results at top conferences.
  • Work as a teaching assistant in two or three 5 ECTS modules.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .

DTU Compute is Denmark's largest environment for mathematics and computer science. DTU Compute's management consists of acting department director and deputy director Jan Madsen, and 10 research section leaders. The department consists of 10 research sections, several centres and a management secretariat. In our brochure you can get a peep into our world. DTU Compute embraces both the deep theory and the practical applications. It enables us to pass on new ideas to innovative products for the benefit of business and public institutions. We take problems and challenges from other disciplines and lift them into a virtual world where we can make models, calculations, and simulations. The results of this work we can lead back to the real world and thus solve a wide range of problems. All engineering students must go through our department as part of their education at DTU. At the same time, we train many engineers who become specialists in our specific areas. Together with our students, we create knowledge and innovation so that we can develop the society of the future.
Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today.
