PhD scholarship in AI-based Cementitious Materials Characterization – DTU Construct
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description

Are you passionate about incorporating AI in the characterisation of cementitious materials?
We are seeking someone like you! In the section on Digital Building Technology (DBT) at DTU, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, and in collaboration with the Department of Structural Engineering of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), you will break new ground for developing digital tools for characterizing micro and macro-level properties of cementitious materials and predicting their performance indices. The PhD candidate is expected to have an external stay of about one year at NTNU. The PhD research is a part of the DTU PhD alliance project “DiGiCEM” and the Villum Young Investigator project, ‘‘Alive Concrete’’.
Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for a curious and enthusiastic colleague who has an interest in developing and deploying AI algorithms for multi-scale characterisation of cementitious materials, solving challenges and working together to meet the projects’ goals. As a part of this project, your responsibilities and qualifications will encompass the following:

  • Microstructural characterisation of cementitious materials (or similar materials), particularly imaging techniques like scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray computed tomography, optical imaging, etc.
  • Image segmentation and classification using deep-learning methods.
  • Predictive modelling using artificial neural networks.
  • Close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Research and teaching efforts at a section and departmental level as appropriate and relevant (e.g., teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects).
  • Dissemination of your research through publications in “top rank journals of the field ” and attendance to conferences.

Flexibility is essential. We are looking for a team player who can also work independently, who is motivated to help make, and be part of, a dynamic research environment and who has a positive, supportive and creative outlook. We expect you to have good communication and personal interaction skills and to be fluent in English.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
