Job Description

Dairy products are susceptible to spoilage by various microorganisms, both during and after manufacturing, which has large economic consequences for the dairy industry. Equally important to consider, are pathogenic microorganisms, the presence of which can cause disease or even death. Thus, measures to control unwanted growth are urgently needed. At DTU Food we offer a PhD position where it will be investigated how selected microorganisms can be used for this purpose, that is, be used as bio-protectants.

The PhD student will join a dedicated research team with an excellent track record, led by Associate Professor Christian Solem.  

Responsibilities and qualifications
In addition to the research tasks, the candidate should expect limited teaching obligations, and is moreover expected to partake in keeping the laboratory environment clean, and ensuring that laboratory equipment is being maintained.   

The researcher will be involved in preparing a study plan and half-year reports, where the latter will be used to assess the PhD student, and ensure that progress is satisfactory. Other tasks will include preparing manuscripts for publication, and presenting data at conferences.

Candidates should have a master level education, have documented experience with Lactic Acid Bacteria and fermentation. Candidates with documented experience in isolating and identifying Lactic Acid Bacteria are preferred as are candidates with a publication record. It is important to have a good English proficiency, and it is essential that the candidate is able to work in a team and collaborate with national and international partners.

  • Two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in Biotechnology or Life Sciences (e.g. Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology)
  • Able to independently plan and carry out research 
  • Able to interact in groups and collaborate
  • Practical experience with molecular biology and bacterial genetics
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
