PhD scholarship – Grid services provided by electric vehicles – unleashing the potential of electric transportation - DTU Wind
Denmark
Job Description

Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of E-mobility integration and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have a great opportunity!

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to join us as PhD scholar.

We offer a multidisciplinary, international, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity, diversity, empathy, and teamwork. You will have a great opportunity to build strong networks with internationally known researchers at DTU and other universities as well as industrial partners.

You will be affiliated with the Section on E-mobility and Prosumer Integration in the Division of Power and Energy Systems. Collaboration with neighboring sections working on distributed energy systems, hybrid power plants, smart grids, power system flexibility, and market design and operation, is encouraged.

The Section on E-mobility and Prosumer Integration undertakes internationally leading research and teaching in the field of EV technologies, charging infrastructure and flexibility, advanced power electronics, battery energy systems and hybrid AC-DC systems. The research in this section is multidisciplinary and the team is currently formed by 27 researchers from 15 different countries.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project is part of a newly funded research project focused on grid services provided by electric vehicles (EVs).

The collaboration envisions unlocking the flexibility potential of EVs and fostering their pro-active integration in the electric power system. The topics center around the technical capability of EVs to perform grid services, aggregation methods to coordinate EV charging, management strategies considering charging needs of users, and identifying/defining potential markets and mechanisms for the service provision in both distribution and transmission systems. The developed control and aggregation methods can be validated in our state-of-the-art research facilitates at Risø campus, which allows real-life demonstrations with actual chargers and vehicles.

This PhD project will actively drive these topics in collaboration with colleagues and other stakeholders. Your primary tasks will be:

  • Plan and manage your PhD project in collaboration with supervisors.
  • Quantify the benefits of coordinating EV charging processes.
  • Develop and validate new control and aggregation methods for coordinating EV charging processes.
  • Define current and prospective pricing mechanisms that enable EV service provision in distribution and transmission systems.
  • Identify technical and regulatory barriers that prevent grid service provision by EVs and propose solutions to how these challenges can be overcome.

A detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors within the first two months after enrolment.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in engineering, natural sciences or similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a Master’s degree. The successful candidate has an education in a relevant engineering field or computer/data science and is motivated to specialize in electrical power systems. Candidates are required to have:

  • Excellent grades in your master program
  • Dedication and the desire to learn
  • Good programming skills (MATLAB and/or Python)
  • Ability to work effectively with data and applied statistics
  • Knowledge of electric power systems and electric vehicle integration
  • Ability to present results in technical reports and prepare scientific papers
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluent in communicating and reporting in English

The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirements for admission to a PhD program at DTU.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
