PhD position: Long-term health consequences of COVID-19 illness among patients with migrant and ethnic minority background
The Department of Public Health/The Danish Research Centre for Migration, Ethnicity and Health (MESU) at the University of Copenhagen is offering one PhD scholarship ” Long-term health consequences of COVID-19 illness among patients with migrant and ethnic minority background” to commence the 1 November 2021. The position is offered for a period of three years.
Description of the field of study
The PhD project is part of a larger project entitled Long-term health consequences of COVID-19 illness among patients with migrant and ethnic minority background funded by NOVO Nordisk Fonden. The project is in collaboration with Department of Infectious Diseases Hvidovre Hospital, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and Amsterdam Medical Centre. The PhD project has two overall components regarding ethnic differences in long-term health consequences of covid-19. First, we will analyse data collected in Danish clinical covid-19 cohorts and second perform interviews with ethnic minorities concerning covid-19 long-term symptoms. Data will be compared to a similar Dutch data collection as well as register-based studies.
Research Environment
MESU was established at the Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen in 2010 and is embedded in the Section for Health Services Research. MESU both initiates and conducts research within the field of migration and health and also contributes to the development of research of others in the field through professional guidance and advice. We offer an inspiring, supportive, engaging, humorous and informal research environment that values interdisciplinary research . The PhD fellow will also be expected to stay at Department of Infectious Diseases at Hvidovre Hospital during data collection periods. The PhD fellow will further spend research stays at Amsterdam Medical Centre.

Qualifications
- Candidates are required to have a master degree in a relevant field e.g. medicine, public health or social sciences
- Candidates are required to be fluent in English, written and spoken, and mastering a Scandinavian language
- Relevant research experience and/or practical experience with migrant health issues
- Candidates with experience and skills regarding clinical data collection and/or qualitative studies will be preferred

Terms of employment
The employment as PhD fellow is full time and for 3 years.
It is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27,780 DKK (April 2021-level), plus pension.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor.
The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement.
Once the assessment work has been completed each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
