PhD in Green and Secure Transactional IoT

Updated: about 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 02 Apr 2023

Applicants are invited for a PhD Fellowship/Scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Electrical and Computer Engineering programme. The position is available from 1 June 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Title:

Green and Secure Transactional IoT

Research area and project description:

The Internet of Things fuels an evolution in information technology in which smart homes, smart cities, industrial production, and smart grids can be realized with IoT technology. Some estimates approximate that 50 billion IoT devices will generate trillions of transactions every day by 2030.

The capability of IoT devices to perform transactions prompts their integration with distributed ledger technology such as blockchain. The blockchain exploits consensus mechanisms to alleviate the problem of mistrust of centralized authorities. The research addresses the design of a blockchain for transactional IoT that provides a communication and control mechanism to securely coordinate the interactions between IoT devices and application services.

The PhD project is concerned with the challenges of providing secure IoT transactions with blockchain technology considering the constrained nature of IoT devices. It involves technologies such as distributed databases, applied cryptography, networks, protocols, and algorithms. The research in secure transactional IoT will be evaluated through a set of use cases within smart grids.
The project includes the following:

  • Construction of models for transactional IoT networks.
  • Design of a lightweight distributed ledger technology (i.e., blockchain) supporting IoT transactions.
  • Implementation of the proposed models.
  • Evaluation through experiments and analysis.
  • Contributions to a common project demonstrator in collaboration with external project partners.
  • Communication of research results.

The qualified applicant will have the opportunity to participate in academic work in the department including participation in teaching activities and curriculum development in relation to the research topic.

  • Project description. For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.

Qualifications and specific competences:

Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar. The applicant should have a background in computer networks. Strong analytical and programming skills are desired. Experience in Linux software development and network simulations is a plus. Excellent English verbal and written skills is required.
