PhD Project in synthesis of redox-active polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Department of Chemistry
Faculty of SCIENCE
University of Copenhagen
Department of Chemistry invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in the synthesis and studies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons incorporating redox-active dithiafulvene units at the periphery. The project is part of the research project “Synthesis-Driven Development of New Two-Dimensional Materials – Redox-Active Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Sheets”, which is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Start date is (expected to be) 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project
This project focuses on the development of synthetic protocols for the preparation of small nanosheets of graphene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), containing redox-active functional units at the periphery, such as heterocyclic dithiafulvenes. Such nanosheets are of potential interest for several applications such as conducting materials and redox sensors for bioapplications. The project is rooted in organic synthesis, but will involve also UV-Vis absorption studies, electrochemical studies (cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry) and electrocrystallization experiments for obtaining conducting materials.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within the field of organic synthesis. Moreover, the candidate must have some experience in performing electrochemical studies (determination of redox potentials, etc.).
Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The research group of Prof. Mogens Brøndsted Nielsen focuses on to design, synthesize, and study of functional macromolecules, in particular π-conjugated molecules. All activities are rooted in organic synthesis. The group is a part of Department of Chemistry, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen, and affiliated also to the Nano-Science Center. We are located in Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern synthesis laboratories.
