The Center for Electric Power and Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR), to be hired by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) and enrolled in our PhD programme at DTU.

The position is ESR12 under the project InnoCyPES (Project ID: 956433), funded by H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, European Training Networks (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/956433 ). The consortium will recruit 15 Marie Curie Early-Stage Researchers working with relevant topics in the same research field. Responsibilities and qualifications
The wind industry is facing more customized needs on wind turbine design and manufacturing, due to various onshore/offshore conditions and grid code requirements. You will work in the Grid Compliance department within Offshore Technology of SGRE, and contribute to build digital signatures of wind turbine subsystems including auxiliary systems based on the current DD wind turbine development, type test data and field measurements, combining whitebox, blackbox, and greybox types of simulation models, incorporating statistical models of the grid, eventually establish a digital twin representation of the grid connected wind turbine and wind power plant control. The developed Digital Twin system will be used to enrich the testing and grid compliance process and methodologies for both, wind turbine and wind power plant.

You are also expected to develop methodologies based on the operational data for evaluating the performance of wind turbines/wind power plants according to grid codes and validate wind power plant simulation models through data mining and event extraction. The work should reduce the cost and time in product development cycles by highly innovative and transferable methodologies.

The work is in collaboration with Austrian Institute of Technology, and in close cooperation with the consortium partners to ensure high customer confidence and acceptance of the new workflow.

Applicants shall have proven interest in interdisciplinary research and be able to work independently as well as in a team. Besides, the following requirements are to be met:

  • Applicants must have a university degree that qualifies for PhD studies at the time of recruitment.
  • an excellent academic record (grades of B or higher)
  • have engineering background relevant to the following areas but not limited to: information science, energy systems engineering, or social science;
  • have good command of English (minimum C1 or equivalent);

The applicants must fulfill the following conditions,

  • Early-stage researchers: Applicants must be early-stage researchers, which means at the date of start, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • Mobility Rule: researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention1 are not taken into account. For international European interest organisations, international organisations, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) or an 'entity created under Union law', recruited researchers must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date at the same appointing organisation.

Assessment

The evaluation and assessment will be based on the principle of The European Charter & Code for Researchers.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be based on the salary conditions of Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN projects. The period of employment is 3 years. The expected start date for the position is 1 November 2021.

SGRE’s Grid Compliance Department is responsible for all grid compliance related aspects during the wind turbine development process – developing and benchmarking of simulation models (WT and WPP level), defining and establishing grid code requirements for future wind turbines (WTs), developing methodologies for grid compliance testing and measurements as well as simulation model validation (including component level- and sub-system level tests). Other aspects of the work are understanding and defining new functionalities that future WT’s needs to fulfill grid codes as well as supporting the feature and parameter ownership for the features the team are responsible for.
