Offer Description

In this PhD project you will create the first ever atomic-resolution liquid cell system for TEM with electrochemical features, and with that, help us grow Insight Chips to become a leading company in the field of liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM) systems.

The startup Insight Chips

Insight Chips develop, manufacture and sell state-of-the-art solutions for LPTEM. Our unique “Nano Channel Chip” enables atomic resolution TEM with just minutes of easy preparation. The system was developed in Prof. K.S. Mølhave’s DTU research group, and is now commercialized by Insight Chips, a DTU spinout founded 2022. Insight Chips has strong and growing international sales traction expecting fine growth in 2024, providing leading scientists across the world with cutting-edge atomic-resolution LPTEM capabilities.

The PhD Project

The goal of the PhD is to develop a nanochannel chip system with electrochemical electrodes as a feature in our nanochannel LPTEM system to enable the first reliable and atomic resolution electrochemical LPTEM with a wealth of possible scientific applications. The developed systems will be tested in collaboration with world-class scientists from MIT (US), TUM (DE) and UCL (UK).

You will optimize existing chip fabrication processes and building on them, create the electrochemical nanochannel chips. With the rest of the team, you will design and prototype the sample holder that holds the chip in the TEM, with attention to the end-user experience and system reliability. The whole solution will finally be tested, verified and used to conduct scientific research with our collaborators.

The job will therefore make you an expert in cleanroom microfabrication, small-scale product manufacturing, electrochemical in situ TEM research, and customer relations. With these skills you will become a key team member in Insight Chips and after successful completion of the project you will very likely be offered to continue your career in Insight Chips.

As an industrial PhD you will be employed by Insight Chips and enrolled as a PhD student at the DTU in the hosting research group of Kristian Mølhave.

About DTU Nanolab and the hosting research group

DTU Nanolab is the National Centre for Nano Fabrication and Characterization in Denmark at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), a top technical university in europe. We provide advanced electron microscopy facilities and 1500+ m2 of growing cleanroom allowing state of the art processing for a large variety of applications with research based expertise. The group of Prof. K.S. Mølhave creates novel microchip systems for electron microscopy and has 10+ years experience in LPTEM.

Terms of employment

The project period is three whole years from the start of the project, starting no later than June 2024. Expect a 4 months approval process for international candidates work permit etc. The project is partially funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark and DTU, and the applicant must be approved by both.

You will be hired full time as an employee in Insight Chips by Emil C.S. Jensen (CEO). Your project is supervised by K.S. Mølhave and Emil Jensen, and we will be in close dialogue about the direction, priorities and focus of the project. You will share Insight Chips’ office space at DTU near the cleanroom.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

We will select the best applicant based on attitude, skill and formal requirements

Grade Qualifications

In your cover letter please address any previous experience with one or more of the following core activities in the project which will be advantageous, but not required as you will learn all in the project:

  • Responsibilities
  • Clean room microchip fabrication
  • TEM, in situ TEM experiments and image analysis/programming.
  • Electrochemistry
  • Personal Skills
  • The ability to drive development and being a team player.
  • The ability to structure your own learning to acquire new skills fast and create new solutions

Applying for the position

Application deadline 1st February 2023.
