Job description and Research field:

The Ph.D. student candidate will be based at the Department of Transport Management, Marketing and Logistics at the Faculty Transport Engineering. The work at the position involves principally advanced research in Transport and logistics with focus on City logistics, application of advanced mathematical and statistical methods in research and publishing the results in valuable international journals.

Title of PhD research:    Rail-enabled urban logistics

Annotation:

Urban logistics is essential for cities but contributes to congestion, emissions, noise and inefficiency. Integrating rail into urban logistics provides an opportunity to enable cleaner and more efficient distribution of goods. Urban freight faces pressing challenges including rising costs, negative environmental impacts, inefficient operations and congestion.

Rail offers advantages for freight movement including economies of scale, lower externalities per ton-km and avoidance of road congestion.

This PhD thesis will analyse the current role and potential of rail in urban logistics through an extensive literature review, evaluation of global best practices, collaborative design process, simulation modelling and real-world piloting. It will provide data, models, and guidelines to support adoption of sustainable urban rail logistics.

Research will apply a mixed methods approach (Fuzzy Logic, Multi-Criteria Decision-Making, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Global Information System, etc.) combining literature analysis, case studies, collaborative design, simulation modelling and real-world piloting.

The initial phase will synthesize urban rail logistics cases globally to identify patterns, success factors, barriers and best practices. The model will be applied to assess life cycle impacts across key performance indicators using empirical data.

Objectives and expected benefits:

The main benefit for the Department of Transport Management, Marketing and Logistics and generally for the University of Pardubice is the extension of international cooperation and international research carried so far.

We expect long-term cooperation with the Ph.D. student and his/her home workplace, as well as maintaining the cooperation after the short-term contract termination through organising joint events (e.g. workshops and seminars) and in the writing of joint publications.

Doc. Ing. Libor Švadlenka, Ph.D. (the Ph.D. student mentor) will be available to the candidate for the whole short-term contract.

 

Requirements:

-        Master´s or equivalent level (ISCED Level 7) awarded not earlier than 3 years before the beginning of the mobility[1] ,

-        over the past 3 years the candidate has published a minimum of 2 papers (as of the beginning of the mobility) in journals indexed in Thomson Reuters Web of Science, Scopus or ERIH PLUS databases,

-        advanced knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods.

What we offer:

-        3 years fixed-term employment – expected commencement date: October 2024, possibly later by mutual agreement,

-        full-time work (8 hours/day),

-        gross monthly salary: CZK 50 000 (approx. 2000 EUR) – employee benefits: annual leave, contributions for meals,

-        A list of research projects (national and international) in which the candidate participated (including the position),

-        List of international stays,

-        A letter of recommendation of the previous supervisor or the head of the department or team where the candidate worked.

All of the documents must be submitted in English. A university diploma or a decision on its recognition and a language exam certificate may also be submitted in Czech or Slovak. If an original of a document is not in Czech, Slovak or English, an official translation into one of these languages is required. A certified copy is not required for the purposes of the selection procedure, a printed or an electronic (pdf) one is sufficient.

Timetable of the selection procedure:

-        Deadline for submitting the required documents: 5th April 2024

-        Evaluation: until 15th April 2024

-        Notification of the results and their announcement on the website of the University of Pardubice: by 19th  April 2024

Each candidate will be notified in writing and receive his or her record. The record will also define the appeal procedure and its time schedule. The selection procedure results will be published on the University of Pardubice's website.

Should any appeals arise, they have to be filed within 15 business days after the results were published on the University website. The appeal must be delivered to the contact person at the University of Pardubice within the set time. The appeal will be dealt with within 15 business days after received. The selection committee will give its opinion on the appeal.

[1] The period may be extended to account for maternity and parental leave, long-term sick leave exceeding 90 days, family caregiver leave exceeding 90 days, medical pre-certification training and military service.

[2] Not required for native speakers.
