The Position

Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems Laboratory has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral fellow with direct research and development experience in robotics and Robot Operating System (ROS). Candidates with experience in industrial robotics application to additive manufacturing processes will be preferred.

This position will be open to candidates who possess an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant discipline, and a Ph.D. in robotics, mechatronics, additive manufacturing, or optimization and control (Ph.D. obtained after 01-January-2018). Applicants who have applied before to the ADAMS lab may also apply if their Ph.D. completion date is after the above date.

Start Date

The position is currently vacant and available for an immediate start. The applications will be reviewed in the order received, and the position will remain open until filled. The contract's initial term will be one year with a possibility of extension depending on the contract's continuation, individual performance, and funding availability.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess expertise and experience in the following areas demonstrated through research or thesis work or professional experience:

  • Proven experience with the robotics software framework Robot Operating System (ROS), preferrably in ROS-industrial, MoveIt!, RViz, and its application to serial robots.
  • Experience in system integration (software and hardware) of robotic systems and various system components and sensing systems
  • Previous demonstrated experience in working on robotic experimental research and development projects
  • Proven experience (projects) in the following programming languages, software and build environments: C/C++, Python, cmake, catkin
  • Preferred qualifications

    In addition to the above requirements, candidates with experience in the following areas will be given priority:

  • Experience in working with additive manufacturing systems (in particular robotic WAAM or laser DED)
  • Experience with programming Motoman and/or ABB robots, including interfacing with ROS
  • Machine learning (OpenAI or PyTorch)
  • The successful candidate will be required to work independently and demonstrate excellent verbal and written English communication skills through high-quality journal publications in the research area. The candidate will also be involved in developing research grant proposals, research management, and the co-supervision of graduate students. The candidate should possess or be eligible to apply for a valid driver's license and will be expected to travel within the city and Alberta as per the project requirements (and following COVID-19 mandated restrictions). The candidate should also be willing and eligible to travel to other provinces or internationally as per the project needs, following COVID-19 mandated restrictions noted by the University of Alberta and the Governments of Alberta and Canada.

    The Project

    The candidate's primary responsibility will be to conduct research and develop large-scale industrial robotic metal additive manufacturing production systems. The project is part of a multi-stakeholder industry-led effort to develop next-generation WAAM and Laser DED systems to improve the functional performance, reliability, and quality of components built via wire-arc and laser DED energy sources. The range of component applications includes the energy, mining, space, and automotive industries.

    The scope of the project includes the following tasks for the design and manufacturing of components:

    • Integration (software and hardware) of various sensing technologies with the existing robotic WAAM and platform and software toolchain for data collection, analysis, and real-time control
    • Process planning and tool path planning for experimental builds, including software development for process planning and build execution
    • Development, design, and implementation of software feature extensions to facilitate the testing of novel process optimization, estimation and control strategies
    • Design develop and implement next-generation hybrid robotic additive manufacturing systems
