This PhD research aims to develop deep learning-based methods for bias correction of climate model simulations, conduct big data analysis for climate change impact assessments, and model extreme events such as floods, droughts, and compound extreme events.

Skills/Qualifications
  • You hold a Master degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics (or you will have obtained it by the time you start work).
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results. Publications and international experience are an asset.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.
  • You are fluent in Python, machine learning, and deep-learning tools (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • You can speak and write fluently in English.
  • A background in climate extreme event analysis is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • You are well-organized, have strong prioritization skills, consistently deliver on time, and are capable of autonomously planning and executing tasks.

Specific Requirements
  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis focusing on the analysis of extreme events using deep learning methods. Your responsibilities will include developing deep learning-based methods for bias correction of climate model simulations, conducting big data analysis for climate change impact assessments, and modelling extreme events such as floods, droughts, and compound extreme events.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project and present results at international conferences and meetings.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for a maximum of 2 hours per week.
  • You will contribute to the Horizon Europe project SCEWERO and other relevant projects.
  • You will supervise bachelor and master students.
