The VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research is part of the VIB Life Sciences Institute and is embedded within the University of Leuven, which ranks among the world’s top 50 universities. At our center, researchers want to force a breakthrough in the cure of neuronal and neurodegenerative disorders. Starting from a deep understanding of normal brain and nerve function and a profound insight into the mechanisms underlying the development of disease, the center aims at developing novel therapeutic strategies.

We are searching for a full-time Grants & Regulatory Officer to support scientists with grant applications and regulatory compliance in the context of brain research.   


Your tasks

You will be working at the Collaborative Research expertise unit under the guidance and supervision of Joris de Wit, adjunct director. This unit is supporting research activities at our center with expertise in forging new collaborations and in helping the teams to apply for research funding as well as project organization, including ethics regulations, biobanking, and data management.

Your tasks will consist of:

  • Contributing to grant writing;
  • Providing help and initiative with assembling collaborative research projects;
  • Scouting collaborative research grant opportunities;
  • Connecting with the other expertise units at our Center and assisting with grant writing for research infrastructure;
  • Contributing to the development of grant-related tools at the level of the center and VIB, and follow-up with their implementation;
  • Setting up mini-sites in collaboration with our science communicator to inform the public/patients about projects using human biological material;  
  • Acting as ethics and compliance advisor for our research groups and ensuring awareness of these topics in our Center;
  • Managing the bilateral communication between the Center and UZ/KU Leuven bio bank; UZ Leuven Clinical Trial Center & VIB business development (BD). In this function you will follow-up on the Belgian legislation related to biobanking, GDPR & human trials and the specific implementation of that legislation at KU Leuven & UZ Leuven.
  • Providing support to all research groups in the Center with ethics authorizations and biobanking, including keeping track of the status of ethics applications, amendments, and other related documents;
  • Maintaining good contacts with colleagues and other services of VIB, UZ Leuven and KU Leuven.

Profile

The function is high-profile and demands initiative, creativity, and a broad interest in (multidisciplinary) neuroscience research. We are looking for a person who has the ambition to make a meaningful difference for our group leaders and researchers in grant writing and in related regulatory and administrative support in all aspects.

Our ideal candidate meets the following criteria:

  • You are the holder of a Ph.D. in life sciences research and are interested in legislation.
  • You are accurate, self-determined, and structured.
  • You are able to prioritize, manage multiple assignments and communicate the status of assignments in a timely manner.
  • You have excellent communication and diplomatic skills.
  • You have advanced skills in Microsoft Office.
  • You are interested in and have an aptitude for IT, especially data management, which is a plus.
  • Excellent command of Dutch and English (orally and in writing).
  • Knowledge of the Belgian and EU regulatory environment for life science research is a plus.
  • Proven experience in a similar role in the life science domain (academic or industrial) is a strong plus.
