The University of Antwerp  is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

The Faculty of Law is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of private international law.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on “Filiation in Private International Law between Biology, Law, and Society”. This project is part of a bilateral WEAVE project funded by the Flemish FWO  and the Swiss SNSF . The project aims to develop a model for the recognition of parent-child relationships that can ensure that filiation established in one state will also be recognised in another state. The project largely focuses on new forms of parentage (including ART).
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project and will present your research results at (inter)national conferences.
  • You will conduct your research under the supervision of Thalia Kruger  and Tine Van Hof , within the framework of the Law and Development Research Group . You will work closely with the Institut suisse de droit comparé  and several national experts.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Faculty of Law  of the University of Antwerp and for the Law and Development Research Group .

Profile

  • You hold a master degree in law or in another relevant field or you will have obtained such a degree by the start date of the position (see below).
  • You submit a research proposal  on the research to be developed (see above). This research proposal of maximum 5 pages contains the following sections: 'state of the art', 'research objectives', 'methodology' and 'bibliography'. The proposal must allow the doctoral research to be successfully completed within a period of four years. The template for the research proposal is in English, but the proposal can also be written in Dutch or in French.
  • The preceding conditions are admissibility conditions.
  • You have a special interest in academic research in the field of private international law and children's and/or women's rights.
  • You have an excellent command of English (passive and active at an academic level) and of Dutch. Command of other languages is an asset.
  • You can present excellent study results, in particular with regard to private international law. You substantiate this with a detailed overview of your study results (see 'Want to apply?').
  • You are self-reliant (e.g., able to plan and organise your own work well) and stress-resistant.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act in accordance with the mission statement  of the University of Antwerp.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship, funded by the FWO, for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
  • The planned start date is 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts  for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus of the University of Antwerp in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
