The Department of Engineering Management in the Faculty of Business and Economics is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of geological economics

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of sustainable subsurface management, funded by the FWO research project MASSIF. Because the subsurface is an interlinked system, competition between subsurface uses is likely to increase. The MASSIF project aims to advance scientific research through the development of an interdisciplinary and dynamic modelling framework integrating hydrogeological models with economic real option games and environmental life cycle assessment. Together with a post-doc research hydrogeology, you will quantify (i) the interactions effects between different subsurface uses, (ii) the boundary conditions for subsurface activities to take place simultaneously, (iii) trade-offs in hydrogeological, environmental and economic impacts, and (iv) the risk benefit balance.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the research group Environmental Economics

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Applied Economics, Business Engineering, or Operations Research  or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You can demonstrate very good presentation skills
  • You are able to discuss research results with stakeholders and end-users
  • You have affinity with the field of Earth Sciences and Geology

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 March 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts  for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at the UAntwerp City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment. You will be encouraged to work at the Geological Survey of Belgium, in Brussels one day a week.
