Offer Description

The research unit Roman Law and Legal History is a dynamic and internationally oriented department that provides broad education and conducts research in various subfields of legal history, including Roman law. Chronologically, the research focus lies on the period after 1500. The members of the unit are responsible for teaching the basic subjects History of Public Law and Roman Law (first phase of the Bachelor's degree) and History of Private Law (second phase of the undergraduate). At master's level, the reflective courses Legal History and History of International Law, as well as European Legal History are offered. The members of the unit are responsible for seminars on legal history in the bachelor's program and also teach canon law. The research has three main focuses: the intellectual development of the continental legal tradition with emphasis on learned Roman and canon law, the historical development of international law, including in the context of colonisation and imperialism, and the historical development of economic law and financial law.

Project

As a PhD student at the research unit Roman Law and Legal History you will be part of a young and dynamic team of four professors and five to ten scientific employees. You will initially work on your own research project, under the supervision of one or more professors, with a view to obtaining a PhD within the maximum term of the appointment (four years). You develop, in consultation with the promoters, your own research project that deals with the theme of the history of the Congo Free State and international law of the nineteenth century. Possible topics include the history and reception of colonial treaties from a comparative European perspective, the legal position of the various organisations and companies that formed the basis of Leopold II's colonial project, or the history of nineteenth-century concession contracts in Central Africa and their development during the period of the Belgian Congo. Extensive archival research is necessary for each of these sub-topics. Within the framework of your research project, you give lectures at national and international conferences and write scientific articles and contributions.

As a PhD student, you provide support and cooperation for a maximum of 20% of the working time in the education tasks of the unit. This primarily involves support for bachelor's courses in Leuven and possibly in Brussels and/or Kortrijk, but can also involve supervising bachelor's seminars or master's theses. This gives you the opportunity to become acquainted with all aspects of academic work and to gain experience.

Profile
  • You graduated in law and/or history, or you will obtain this degree at the latest in September 2023;
  • You achieved good to very good results (at least one distinction);

  • You are interested in or have experience with archival research;
  • You can handle deadlines and perform well under pressure;
  • You have a strong interest in scientific research, have broad social and historical interests, are well-read and have excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • You are collegial, can work well in a team-setting, but are also able to work independently and systematically.
