Summary of Duties:

The MESA Middle School Coordinator coordinates and implements the Spokane MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program in accordance with the local and statewide curriculum guidelines. 
The focus for the program is the student, with the primary interest to provide mathematics, science, and technology programs for African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Pacific Islanders, and female populations. The Spokane MESA Center currently serves seven (7) middle schools and five (5) high schools and their teachers. 
In support of classroom instruction, the MESA Program offers various instructional programs and events including MESA field trips, competition, and MESA teacher workshops. The Coordinator works with the Spokane MESA office at Washington State University Spokane.

Essential Duties:

Coordination - 50%

  • Coordinates MESA programs at each of the identified MESA middle schools in math and/or science classrooms to include field trips, MESA Competition prep and guest speakers.
  • Develops and implements new and appropriate curriculum and enrichment models for individual schools’ MESA math and science classes.
  • Works with Spokane MESA Director in planning academic program curriculum for the Spokane MESA Center, aligning activities in and out of the classroom to curriculum needs of the school district.
  • Coordinates pre-event workshops with MESA teachers. Collaborates with MESA teachers and community mentors in the development of hands-on classroom activities that align with curriculum.
  • Monitors MESA curriculum and enrichment offering at the state level for suitability in the Spokane program.

Student Services - 25%

  • Designs and implements academic opportunities for students such as college and career readiness planning and academic advising.
  • Communicates regularly with students regarding local and regional programs that support their academic and future college preparatory goals.
  • Regional travel is required in support of these services.

Program Management - 20%

  • Promotes the MESA program to principals, math and science teachers, and counselors to develop opportunities for students to explore and prepare for careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
  • Works with middle school counselors and teachers in developing, implementing, recruiting students for, and maintaining quality in the MESA Program.
  • Coordinates and communicates the MESA philosophy and benefits of program participation to school administrators, teachers, and staff at MESA partner schools, parents, and students.
  • Travels regularly to each middle school in performing duties. Works with area professionals who are recruited to assist with MESA events and mentor student participants.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

Additional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, engineering, science or a related field. 
  • Two years of teaching experience in middle/high school mathematics or science.  
  • Reliable transportation is required.  
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid unrestricted driver’s license by date of hire.  
  • Some travel, evening, and weekend work is necessary for this position.
  • Must have experience working with, and demonstrating a caring positive attitude towards, people with culturally diverse backgrounds. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years or more teaching experience in middle/high school mathematics or science. 
  • Demonstrate management, organization, communication, event coordination, and leadership skills. 
  • Experience working with teachers, students, parents, university staff and community representatives. 
  • Experience in school curriculum development in math or science.  
  • Experience or contact with local business and industries that provide careers in math, science, technology, engineering, or related fields.
