Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

With a focus on first year business students, the Senior Academic Advisor provides advising and resources specific to the needs of new students transitioning into WSU. Working collaboratively with the Assistant Director and other members of the academic advising team, the Senior Academic Advisor will support college recruitment and retention initiatives as well develop curriculum in Canvas for orienting new students to WSU academics, and oversee the College’s tutoring program. Duties include but are not limited to: advising undergraduate students year-round; motivating students to set and achieve educational and career goals; conducting workshops and presentations; providing programming that promote academic success skill development; monitoring students’ academic progress; develop and coordinating student success programs. Individuals who are first-generation college graduates or from lower-income or under-represented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of full-time academic advising experience in a college or university or related experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional academic advising experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis. Positions who will lead or supervisor will require one or more years of full-time experience leading or directing the work of others.

Additional Requirements

  • Experience with first-year or new student programs, and experience applying academic rules and regulations. 

  • Broad knowledge of and work experience with supporting students from diverse populations. 

  • Demonstrated experience with programming, student services, and program evaluation. 

  • Demonstrated computer skills and work experience using student record systems in higher education institutions. 

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 

  • Demonstrated ability to remain professional, courteous, and interact effectively with people in a positive manner that engenders confidence and trust. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 

  • Ability and willingness to occasionally work after regular business hours and on weekends. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field. 

  • Working knowledge of learning styles, freshman year experience, retention and academic success strategies, including strategic/proactive academic interventions. 

  • Strong public speaking skills and the ability to develop and deliver engaging and informative presentations to students and other stakeholders. 

  • Experience with programs serving first-generation and under-represented student populations.

Monthly Salary: Commensurate with qualification and experience.
