Summary of Duties:

The Research Intern will assist in the design and conduction of research projects, protocols, and experiments to support scientific investigations for Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Jingru Sun, her lab members or collaborators. 

 

Work performed includes conducting experiments; analyzing and documenting research data; assisting with laboratory operations and maintenance; participating in lab activities such as lab meetings and discussions; and performing related duties as required by the PI.  The successful candidate is encouraged to perform an independent research project. 

Essential Duties:

75%- Program Operations

  • Design and conduct routine experiments, protocols, and projects. 
  • Collect and analyze research data.
  • Prepare scientific reports, graphs, charts, and data analysis results for publications, grant applications, presentations, etc.
  • Prepare shared reagents and media. 
  • Make and maintain C. elegans stocks, bacterial stocks, construct stocks, etc. 
  • Manage and archive datasets for the laboratory. 
  • Submit datasets to and retrieve datasets from public databases. 
  • Present and explain scientific or technical data to the PI and other lab members. 
  • Planning and organizing the logistics research projects. 
  • Supporting development of program and project ideas and preparing proposals and marketing materials to obtain support and funding. 

20%- Laboratory Operations

  • Oversee lab supplies. Order reagents and other experimental materials for the lab. 
  • Write and maintain lab notes (both paper and electronic versions) for the laboratory. 
  • Participate in lab meetings and planning sessions.
  • Perform general lab maintenance and cleaning.
  • Coordinate, manage, and maintain daily lab operations. 
  • Train new lab members and others. 

5%- Other

  • Perform other related works as required


Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.

Additional Requirements:

  • Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field.
  • Prior research experience in immunology, microbiology, molecular genetics, etc.
  • Prior experience with Caenorhabditis elegans  research is required.  


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience with fluorescence microscope is preferred.
