ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) has an opening for a Water Systems Group (WSG) Mechanical Technician within the Experimental Support & Facilities Division (ES&F).  The Mechanical Technician’s role within the Water Systems Group is responsible for the operations, maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, controls programming and construction of cooling water/compressed air systems in support of C-AD experiments throughout the laboratory.  Systems include, but are not limited to, water/air cooled chillers, cooling towers, open/closed loop piping systems, heat exchangers, pumping systems, de-ionized water systems, electronics/magnet cooling water systems, electrical and electronic controls including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), instrumentation air/pneumatic controls systems. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate, repair, maintain, assemble, and install the air and water systems and associated sub systems for the C-AD Water Systems Group
    • Installation and repair of water system components including pumps, flow meters, inline strainers, etc.
    • Observe system trending and assess for potential issues via HMI display
    • Perform work on water systems that are composed of numerous materials including, but not limited to, copper, PVC, and stainless steel
  • All Hours emergency call-ins for all utilities system repairs, trips, or system related situations
  • Work safely and follow all applicable procedures and policies

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    • a BS degree in a technical field or;
    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 year's experience or;
    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or;
    • 6 years relevant work experience.
  • Working knowledge of open and closed loop constant/variable speed pumping systems
  • Proficiency in the use of standard test and measurement equipment, flow meters, pressure gauges, multimeters, etc.
  • Ability to install piping systems independently
  • Experience maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting heat transfer systems
  • Experience in the safe use of power hand tools such as
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work under minimum supervision
  • Proficiency with computers and MS Office Suite especially Excel and Word

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 8 years or greater of relevant fulltime work experience preferred.
  • Experience working with sheet metal including welding, cutting, bending, etc.
  • Experience with machine shop equipment and practices
  • Knowledgeable regarding cooling tower system operations including heat exchangers.
  • General understanding of PLC systems and/or programming
  • Aerial lift experience and knowledge of general rigging practices

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70200 - $82300 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group. Candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on breadth and depth of knowledge.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Will receive initial and periodic training on the environmental, health, and safety rules and regulations
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights above 6 feet, and lift up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to work in an area the emits radiation within safety parameters
