The Position

The Vice Chair of Finance & Administration (VCFA) of the Department of Emergency Medicine, in partnership with the department chair and other department leaders, is responsible for strategic development and execution of the department and institutional goals supporting the tripart mission.  The VCFA provides financial, administrative and operational oversight for the Department, ensuring that all decision-making is aligned with the departmental and institutional mission, goals and strategies.  Reporting to the Department Chair and School’s Associate Dean of Administration and Operations, the VCFA has high visibility and represents the needs of the department throughout UW Medicine.  The role is institutionally focused, truly embodying the tripart mission of education, research, and patient care within one operational area of the institution.  

The VCFA has a wide portfolio of responsibilities including financial, operations, practice plan, compliance and risk, research, human resources, facilities and educational program management.  The VCFA is responsible for maintaining financial achievement throughout the department including the management of federal, state, private, and university fund sources while ensuring the integrity of all financial transactions.  In partnership with the Chair, they are expected to monitor performance of emergency department clinical services and provide oversight of the clinical revenue cycle management program to optimize department revenue in compliance with UW Medicine policies. They will oversee the management of the research resources of the department, to include grant and contract staff and processes, research staff support, capital equipment and physical plant, and compliance issues.  The VCFA will ensure adequate support for the directors of all education programs, including oversight of the administrative teams and strategic budgeting.  The Vice Chair will be responsible for the coordination and management of operational and administrative initiatives including reports, programs, strategic plans, human resources, and marketing initiatives. Additionally, this leader will implement change management processes as necessary to improve departmental and organizational dynamics.  They will engage with appropriate external audiences to represent UW Medicine and the department and stay apprised of trends impacting our business.

Seeking a forward-thinking leader who brings extensive leadership, financial, administrative, and strategic experience within a large acute care/academic healthcare setting to drive results and ensure the achievement of departmental and organizational financial, operational, and administrative goals.

The Vice Chair will maintain close facilities management throughout multiple campuses throughout the UW Medicine organization by ensuring effective, efficient, and safe operations.

Requirements
Master’s degree in business administration (MBA), healthcare administration, public health, or another related field is required.

A minimum of 5+ years of experience within a related setting is required. 

Compensation Details
Compensation Range - $14,583 - $18,333 per year dependent upon experience, education, and training.

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) is responsible for the oversight and clinical care within three emergency departments within UW Medicine. These emergency departments see a combined annual patient volume of approximately 120,000.  The department supports a 4-year emergency medicine residency program with 18 residents per year, four fellowship programs, as well as a required 4th year medical student rotation for the UW School of Medicine.  The department structure includes four (4) Sections: Critical Care, EMS, Population Health, and Emergency Ultrasound.  The department has a robust research program, including funding from both government and private sources.  The mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine is to advance and shape the future of emergency care locally, regionally, and globally. We foster this mission through the delivery of exceptional patient-centered emergency care; the provision of state-of-the-art emergency medicine education; and innovation, transformative research and discovery. The department has an annual budget of $40M and has 100 faculty and 75 staff.
