Description of Work Unit | The CSU VTH exists to providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community while educating the next generation of veterinarians at a tertiary level teaching hospital. Critical Care Services provides medical care for small animals and exotics on an emergency basis and intensive 24 hour care to patients who are admitted for extended treatment. We simultaneously provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians, and others, conduct and support clinical research, and provide referral outreach to clients and referring veterinarians. |
Position Summary | UC is rapidly expanding in terms of high acuity cases and the number of clinicians to see those cases. This requires the addition of higher level technicians to support the increase in cases and clinicians. In moving this to a VTII position, a person of higher technical skill and knowledge can be hired into the unit. This position must 1) Triage all incoming emergency cases and assess the client situation for optimal care 2) Stabilizes emergent, medically dynamic patients 3) Assist and initiate advanced procedures such as pericardiocentesis and positive pressure ventilation 4) Monitors patients to assess response to treatment or need to initiate treatment 5) Coordinates and provides care of ill or injured animals with doctors, students and other staff, including nursing care and technical procedures 6) Provides medically-experienced phone triage/screening and support 7) Facilitates coordination and communication between appropriate hospital departments, clients, and referring veterinarians 8) Provides clinical and didactic instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, technicians, graduate veterinarians and others 9) Directs activities of the Urgent Care Unit, oversees maintenance, charging and provides continuity of care. |
Minimum Qualifications | Associate degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND two years of experience assisting in the direct care of emergency and critical care small animal patients (e.g.: canine and feline). Must be willing and able to work an overnight shift scheduled from 10:00 p.m. -8:00 a.m., or 9:00 p.m. -7:00 a.m., with days being either Sunday – Wednesday, or Monday – Thursday, depending on employee and unit needs. Must be willing to work weekends and overnight shifts. Flexible schedule available upon discussion. |
