What we want

The Veterinary Technician III provides for and supervises care and treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Provides assistance and supervision to the professional staff, instructs veterinary students and subordinate staff in clinical techniques, and oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Required Education:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:

  • Four years of technical experience in a veterinary hospital, referral clinic or specialty hospital environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary hospital.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Advanced computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry.

  • Ability to manage time wisely and prioritize duties and cases.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively at all levels within the Hospital.

  • Must be able to work within time constraints and in crisis situations.

  • Ability to manage expectations and conflict.

Preferred Education:

  • Licensed Veterinary Technician in Texas, or ability to obtain.

  • Veterinary Technician Specialty in Emergency / Critical Care or Internal Medicine.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of full-time experience as a supervisor, shift lead, team lead, office manager or other supervisory / managerial experience.

  • Specialty training in small animal medicine and / or emergency care.

  • Greater than four years of technical experience in a small animal veterinary hospital, referral clinic or specialty hospital environment.

  • Advanced training in management or leadership.


Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Licensed Veterinary Technician in Texas, or ability to obtain.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary hospital.

  • Advanced knowledge and training on complex nursing procedures such as central line placement,

  • ventilator management, dialysis.


Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Instructs students, and subordinate staff in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Instructs / places peripheral, central, and arterial catheters. Performs urinary catheterization in male and female patients. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status. Proficient in drug and constant rate infusion calculations and administration. Provides one-on-one nursing care to critical patients. Instructs, guides, and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Provides physical restraint for the safe handling of patients. Performs or assists with the collection of patients’ blood, urine, and tissues. Assists with the proper submission of blood, urine, and tissues. Maintains availability to be called in to assist with difficult IV catheter placement, fresh blood draws, and other advanced technical skills as needed. Assists and instructs in the performance of diagnostic procedures and examinations.

  • Monitor and record data: Enters hospital fees into the hospital computer information system. Ensures that all charges generated from treatments, procedures, and supplies are correctly billed. Enters patient data into the hospital computer information system.

  • Maintain service area: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains records of expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions.

  • Administrative & Supervisory Responsibilities: Assists with developing, implementing, and reviewing Policy & Procedures for ICU department. Assist with equipment management and repair. May assist with interview of new staff. May lead or assist with orientation of new staff, students, or clinicians.

  • Instruction: Instruction of orientation for new students, staff, resident, interns, and clinicians.

  • Assigned courses: Remains current with TAMU and VMTH assigned courses. Participates in the following training as needed: Radiation safety, Infection control, and aseptic technique. Performs other duties as assigned.
