What we want

The Veterinary Technician I, under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician II or higher is responsible for providing assistance to faculty, staff and students with patient care and treatments. The Veterinary Technician I helps maintain a clean, sanitary and functionally well-organized service area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Other Requirements and Factors:

Hours: 8PM-9AM Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This position is eligible for shift differential.

Provides quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.

May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call” duty.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical math

  • Able to appropriately handle and restrain feline and canine patients with methods that are both fear free and/or feline friendly.

  • Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and positively with all individuals in a veterinary medical teaching hospital setting.

  • Ability to plan and organize effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • One year of experience in a veterinary medicine setting.

  • Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency Critical Care.

  • General understanding of equipment used within a veterinary medical teaching hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Small Animal Emergency Receiving Service Responsibilities: Performs triage patient assessment of patients presenting to the SA-ER Service. Monitors and records vitals of patients. Communicates changes in patient status to attending clinician. Assists clinicians, residents, and students with stabilization and treatment of critical patients. Performs CPCR and defibrillation. Provides oxygen therapy. Instructs and supervises students, in the absence of a professional staff member, in CPCR techniques and emergency procedures and principles. Maintains crash cart, anesthesia machine, and other equipment and supplies needed for CPCR. Assists clinicians, residents, and students with patient examinations. Administers patient medications and treatments as directed by the attending clinician. Administers and monitors fluid therapy. Performs pain score assessments. Assists clinicians, residents and students with proper sedation protocols and techniques. Assists with obtaining radiographs. Maintains complete and accurate medical records, ensuring all appropriate fees are captured. Restrains patients with methods that are both fear free and/or feline friendly. Monitors safety compliance for patients and staff. Maintains clean and sanitary patient environment. Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, PCV/TS, Alpha Trak BG, Lactometer, IDEXX Procyte, IDEXX Catalyst, IDEXX Sedivue, ISTAT, Snap tests, Canine and Feline Alvedia Blood Type Test, Canine and Feline Alvedia Cross Match Test, Urinalysis).

  • Clinical Responsibilities: Places and maintains IV catheters. Instructs, guides, and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status and keep patients clean. Provides physical restraint for the safe handling of patients. Performs or assists with the collection and submission of patients’ blood, urine, and tissues. Assists and instructs in the performance of diagnostic procedures and examinations. Administers patient treatments following a clinician’s orders without direct supervision. Performs medical procedures per clinician’s direction. Places and maintains urinary catheters. Places and maintains nasal cannulas and nasal prongs for oxygen therapy. Places and maintains bandages. Performs wound management. Anesthetizes and monitors patients for minor procedures. Provides assistance to other services as caseload permits

  • Teaching and clinical research: Participates in the instruction of technical skills in labs and seminars as needed. Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed within the terms of employment (<10%). Assists in clinical research efforts to include record keeping and data management.

  • Maintaining safe, clean, sanitary work environment: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical teaching hospital. Restocks supplies and medical inventory as needed. Cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service. Maintains equipment within the service area.

  • Required training, compliance, and administrative procedures: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, Radiation safety training, Infection Control, Aseptic Technique and maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Ensures all hospital fees are correctly captured and entered into the hospital electronic medical records system. Enters worked time and leave entry in Workday in a timely manner. Answers email correspondence. Assists with school and hospital accreditations and inspections (AVMA, IACUC, AAHA, AAALAC, etc.). Performs duties as assigned as an essential employee of the VMTH.
