What we want

The Veterinary Technician I, under the supervision of a professional staff member or veterinary technician II or higher, assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, provides assistance to the professional staff, may assist in instructing veterinary students in proper clinical technique for supporting primary care; helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience: 


  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 


 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 


  • Basic computer skills. General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital preferred.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Customer Service Experience. 


 


Preferred Qualifications:


  • One year experience in veterinary medical setting. 

  • Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. 


Responsibilities:


  • Patient Care: Instructs and indirectly supervises students in proper patient care techniques. Assesses and monitors patients. Administers medications and provides appropriate diet according to clinician’s orders. Performs placement and maintenance of IV catheters. Facilitates proper collection and submission of laboratory samples including blood, urine, and tissue samples. Assists with diagnostic procedures, and exams. Provides appropriate physical restraint of patients in a manner that ensures the safety of personnel and the patient. Performs laboratory tests. 


 


  • General Technical Job Duties: Ensures that all fees are appropriately entered into VMIS. Enters patient data into VMIS. Instructs and assists students and interns with VMIS. Records physiological data into the patient medical record. Records administration of all medications and treatments. 


 


  • Teaching and Clinical Research: Provides indirect supervision to students performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Participates in laboratory instruction and instruction of the clinical skills lab. Instructs students in proper techniques. 


 


  • Maintaining safe, clean, sanitary work environment: Maintains a sanitary and organized service area. Maintains working stock of pharmaceuticals and disposable items. Maintains inventory of disposable items and facilitates ordering. Maintains equipment within the service area. Ensures proper husbandry of hospitalized patients particular to their species. 


 


  • Required Training, compliance, and administrative procedures: Maintains various certifications and rabies prophylaxis; radiation safety, infection control, aseptic technique, certification or licensure when appropriate, current rabies vaccination, monitors rabies titer. Performs other duties as assigned.
