What we want

The Veterinary Technician I, under the supervision of a professional staff member or veterinary technician II or higher, assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, provides assistance to the professional staff, may assist in instructing veterinary students in proper clinical technique for supporting primary care; helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills. General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital preferred. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in veterinary technology

  • One year of technical experience in a large animal veterinary hospital, referral clinic or specialty hospital environment.

  • Equine and Food Animal experience

  • Specialty training in large animal medicine and / or emergency care.

  • Licensed Veterinary Technician in Texas, or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Monitors medical condition of patients admitted to the hospital. Instructs / places peripheral, central, and arterial catheters. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status. Proficient in drug and constant rate infusion calculations and administration. Provides nursing care to critical patients.  Provides physical restraint for the safe handling of patients. Performs or assists with the collection of patients’ blood, and other tissues, and submits to appropriate laboratory. Assists and instructs in the performance of diagnostic procedures and examinations.

  • General Technical Duties: Records all medications administered, fluid types and volumes administered, information regarding urine output, mentation, appetite, and other parameters as needed in medical record system. Records changes in the medical orders, as directed by the clinician. Captures fees and inputs fees into the system. Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, glucose level, PCV/TS, and lactate). Provides life sustaining emergency care. Assists clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection. May assist in other service areas based on patient and staffing needs.

  • General duties: Maintains inventory and replenishes stock. Performs service and maintenance of equipment. Ability to be in on call status.

  • Teaching: Instructs, guides, and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. May assist in various continuing education seminars or skill labs.

  • Training and Certification: Remains current with various requires TAMU and department specific training courses. Maintains current rabies prophylaxis. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned.
